AT&T Completes $1.9B Purchase of 700 MHz LTE Spectrum

- By - Source : AT&T

AT&T confirmed that it has completed the purchase of 700 MHz spectrum licenses from Qualcomm.

For about $1.9 billion, AT&T gains coverage of more than 300 million people. AT&T received FCC approval for the purchase on December 22.

AT&T intends to use the spectrum to expand its LTE network. Qualcomm previously had planned to leverage the spectrum for its FLO TV to broadcast TV to cellphones, but discontinued the product due to a lack of consumer interest on March 27 of this year. The transaction to AT&T includes unpaired Lower 700 MHz D and E Block licenses that cover all of the United States with 6 MHz or 12 MHz of Lower 700 MHz spectrum, along with five 6 MHz Economic Area licenses in the Lower 700 MHz E Block that apply to five metropolitan areas - New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. According to the FCC, the metropolitan licenses cover more than 70 million people.

Qualcomm originally purchased the 700 MHz spectrum for $125 million and supported FLO TV with an additional $558 million of spectrum purchase.

They should offer public stock for the EM spectrum, so we can have spectrum trading, spectrum securities, etc.

ANY service provider requires you to carry a data plan with a smartphone. Where exactly did you go that lets you use your iphone with no data plan?

Doesn't mean a thing. AT&T doesn't invest in its customers.

Great idea! Lets take all the speculation, volatility, greed, and profiteering in the stock market and multiply that by all the speculation, volatility, greed, and profiteering in the telco industry! People are already getting too good a deal on their wireless bills as it is, right? We'll go ahead and give the telcos one more fee to pass on to the average American. I mean these corporations (because they're people too) simply can't survive on their record profits any longer. It's either grant them absurd profits from now on, or your a communist.

As the greediest bastard in America, you sir just won the GOP primary! How does it feel?

AT&T will be fine - LTE is turning out for now not to be a big driver of sales. Look at the iPhone 4S selling like hotcakes and people tend to go to AT&T with HSPA+ which offers speeds that are more than fast enough to do most tasks. A year from today AT&T will have a large chunk of the USA covered with LTE just like Verizon plus they will have the HSPA+ to fall back on which will become a bigger thing as time goes on.
