ASRock Jumping on Tablet Bandwagon Too

- By - Source : Maximum PC

ASRock is looking to launch a Honeycomb-based Tegra 2 tablet in Q2 2011.

Last year Taiwanese company ASRock became the third-largest motherboard manufacturer in the world, leaping past ECS and MSI by selling eight million mainbords during 2010. The company was a distant third compared to the second-largest manufacturer-- Gigabyte-- which sold around 18 million boards that same year. Asus ruled the market by shipping 21.6 million motherboards in the same time frame, missing its projected target of 25 million.

Sitting comfortably in its new-found seat, Asus spinoff manufacturer ASRock is now looking into entering the tablet market. According to ASRock's VP of Sales Li Jun-Ying, the company is currently indecisive on whether it will produce a 7-inch or 10-inch tablet; however, it will reportedly tap into Pegatron Technology, previously an Asus subsidiary, to build the actual device.

For now ASRock is only interested in using Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor and Google's Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" operating system for the upcoming tablet. Little else is known about the device save for a possible release date: Q2 2011. The specs also aren't finalized, so at this point everything is speculation until ASRock releases something official within the next few months. There's also a good chance we'll see the tablet make an appearance at Mobile World Congress next month.

Additional reports indicate that ASRock didn't make its 2010 goal of shipping nine million motherboards, missing the target by a big million units. The company plans to re-attempt the nine million goal in 2011 and to boost the shipment proportion of its mid-range and high-range motherboards from 20-percent to 30-percent in the same year.

More tablets means more competition which is naturally better for us as consumers.
It also gives us more choices, but the problem with this is that almost all of these upcoming tablets are going to run CPU's, GPU's and RAM that are close to identical to each other (in comparison to other tablets).

As far as I'm concerned, ASROCK motherboards are just as stable and rock solid as ASUS motherboards, the only difference is ASROCK doesn't equip their boards with all of the useless expensive stuff like ASUS does. That's my opinion.

Call it what you want but ASROCK is a value brand which means fewer features and lower quality.

You get what you pay for which is low quality.....

The Problem with the "tablet pc market" is not the hardware, (i said this to a friend many years ago.. when we used them at work).. The Problem is the WINDOWS.. if i bought a sports car and then dicied to get an elephant to drive it. it will be one slow and clunky car... now im no apple fan boy but if its one thing they got Absolutley right it is the software that drives the ipad that made it the one and only tablet device do far just for the user experience alone.. if these manufactures want to make an ipad wannabe, Then the operating system that is driving the devise needs to be developed to fit.. if they are just making a cheap touch screen laptop with no keyboard and chucking windows 7 on it.. then im afraid i for one won't even entertain it, and i doubt many others will either

Then I guess if they try to make their product stand out they better put a decent touchscreen on it huh?

maybe they should start their tablet brand by waiting for tegra2 3d or the tegra3.
they will have too much competition in tegra2 segment

I completely disagree. ASRock has as much, if not more features than other companies including Asus. They have the windows instant boot, the iPhone remote controller thing, and they were the firs compan to come out with fully integrated sata3, usb3 and esata3.

I don't dare buy their motherboards, as they're always doing something silly with the design or mating the unlikeliest of features. But in a tablet that might be cool! Perhaps you'd actually want a tablet with a serial connection or equipped with gddr5 or whatever they can come up with.
