Rumors that Microsoft may be phasing out the Xbox 360 Elite console may be true depending on how Resident Evil 5 Elite sales go, according to Fudzilla resources.

Fudzilla's behind the scenes contacts have revealed a unique strategy for the high profile Elite edition, where retail orders of the Elite would cease in the second quarter of 2009 in order to allow remaining inventory to deplete.  Once on hand inventory is eliminated, Microsoft would then consider phasing in a new limited edition version of the Elite, with exclusive distribution at select retailers.

According to the source, the primary reason for the elimination of the Arcade, Pro, and Elite business strategy is the economy.  The Elite edition currently demanding a significant premium in price over the other versions.  The Xbox 360 Arcade is priced at $199.99, the Pro at $299.99, and the Elite at $399.99.  The main difference between the Pro and the Elite edition is the color scheme of the console and controller, and a 120 GB hard drive.

As reported by Fudzilla, Xbox 360 Elite consoles sit on the shelves significantly longer than the Arcade and Pro editions.  With the Xbox 360 receiving significant upgrades in heat management, die size, and DVD drives, older Elite consoles tend to offer less value over the other versions the longer they sit.

Official responses on the matter are expected within the coming weeks.

Wrong the main difference between the Pro and Elite is the fact that one has HDMI out and the other doesn't.

Pro versions have had hdmi for quite some time now.

^ I bought a PS3 because I wanted to play video games, not Blu Ray movies. Most people I know who have a PS3 who are going to buy one are doing for the same reason.

As for the article, smart move my MS. Besides the bigger HDD and color scheme, the Elite offers nothing the newer 360s bring to the table.

The one thing to end this console war would be to have the arcade at $150. It would kill the ps3 except for people that are looking for a blu-ray player of course. People are not buying the ps3 right now except for the people wanting a blu-ray player.

I dont think Ive ever watched a BluRay movie on my PS3. But I do watch streamed HD movies and play a hell of a lot of games. I think PS3 has better exclusives than the X360, and dont forget about the RROD.

If they sold the RE5 X360 for cheaper I might get it. Considering it is a confirmed Jasper.

All versions have had HDMI for a while actually >.>

Also, the elite originally was a fixed version of the original and almost never got the ring of death.

Microsoft finally made something that worked and realized it so they are going to stop production.

ignorance runs rampant in this one.

they might be phasing it out because of the ps3 price drop in the near future... 120gb elite, PFFT, why spend $400 on a black console with less features than a $300 console? besides the -40gb, but id rather get the bluray... and pro's price is gonna drop soon, we'll see how this turns up. [watch nintendo drop wii to $150, game over man, GAME OVER]

I think my 360 sucks. It's been in for repair once, it locks up occasionally, it's loud and it doesn't have hdmi. At least it plays *most* games well, and has a comfortable controller.

I tried to use a guy's PS3 this weekend while I was house-sitting. I tried to play 2 demos and resistance 2. One of the demos and resistance 2 didn't work at all. They'd stick at the first screen and not allow me to continue. It's also quite loud. The menus were just as frustratingly silly as xbox's NXE, but in my opinion superior. I enjoyed the video previews when looking through your library. The controller hurts my hands. I watched a couple of movies with it though and it's quite adept at that task. Blue ray's are pretty incredible.

So from my experience, xbox is for games, ps3 is for media.

LOL your joking right. PS3 with better exclusives? Keep smoking your crack pipe. I can count on one hand the number of exclusives on PS3 that are actually worth a damn but Id have to get out a notepad to list all of them on xb360. Theres good reason that Final Fantasy is coming to the 360 and not exclusive to the PS for the first time ever.

I smell a fanboy.

I bought a PS3 because I thought Gears was nothing special, Halo 3, was hella overrated and had the worst single player campaign, and oh I really can't think of any thing else that really intrigues me on the 360. I don't like RPGs so that throws Fable II out the door. And I played it with a friend and I didn't think it was even that good.

Given the fact that the PS3 has been out 1 year less than the 360, this year will delivery plenty of quality exclusives to the already good line up. Killzone 2, Resistance 1 & 2, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid, Little Big Planet to name a few. And with Infamous, God of War III, rumor of another Ratchet and Clank, and a new Drake's game on the horizon, I'm rather glad I dropped the money on a PS3 than a 360. Plus free online and not having the fear of your console pooping itself.

The big thing for the XBOX is the Live market place. That is a huge sell. Sony is still behind the ball on that count.

I don't see what's so better about Live than PS3 Network. To me it just sucks. Fact is I got an xBox360 and don't play online cause I goddamn have to pay for it, what the hell? I mean, it's all an urban legend coming from the PS2 Network time. xBox Live is 'easier to use and more intuitive', I mean come on, it takes a retarded 6 years old to be taken by the hand like that to online play. To me it's so dumbed down that it sucks. PS3 Network looked more to me like an Online PC experience, which is good in my book. The only thing I prefer from xBox is it's controller shape and button positionning, but then again the analog quality of the xBox controller is inferior to the PS one. Like an other guy pointed out, Gears is cool but nothing special... But Resistance 1 or 2 is'nt either for me. Killzone 2 is the shit, and Metal Gear 4 too, even though it's not my type of game. Little Big Planet is gay and overated to me, so it's the equivalent to Halo 3 lol. Fable 2 is a great exclusive if your into RPG, I am. But even if I am I would prefer having a PS3 for Killzone 2 all the way right now. But yeah, PS3 is expensive....still...PS3 > xBox360 Elite all the way. I had to go for the 299$CA of the xBox360 Pro unfortunatly, and even that was still too expensive for me.

To people who can't read demonhorde665's posts, I think he has dyslexia. Of course I could be wrong and he is just horrible at typing (possibly not first language). I've had a few friend's with it, so it is easy for me to read it, but don't yell at the guy if you don't know.

Man, I was almost about to regret my purchase of the new Resident Evil Xbox 360. But then I read these posts. I know the economy is bad, but not for everyone. I'm educated and I've done well for myself. However, I won't just buy any system. The PS3, it doesn't strike me as a viable system that can offer more. Think about how long it took with Killzone 2 to come out. This is the best that Sony has to offer on its system and Microsoft already had that in Halo 3 and Gears of War. Those 2 franchises might be waning now but they got the job done and sold a lot of systems and a lot of games as well. I don't doubt that Killzone 2 will do the same thing and even MSG 4 did the same thing. Fact is, developers will be looking for tools in the future which will let them get done with a game faster and more efficient not necessarily processing power. I'm with the Xbox 360. I also have a Wii but that is only for the family and we have one game...Wii Sports. Nothing really special with that system.

Personally, I think MS should do away with all the Shennanigans and just sell all xboxes as a basic unit.... offer them up in all kinds of colors and let the customers decide on their hard drives and controllers and such. They're already making a killing on overpriced peripherals as it is. If they're going to offer up a "Special Edition" version based on a game, they should modify the case or something. Give me a reason to spend that extra money on that special edition, no?
