Get an iPhone 3GS for FREE This Friday Only
Looks like AT&T is trying to reel in more subscribers before its exclusivity runs dry.
Earlier this week we reported that Radio Shack had an awesome iPhone deal this week only, offering the latest iPhone 4 for at least $25 thanks to an instant discount and the trade-in value of the 3GS model. However Best Buy plans to call Radio Shack's bluff and raise it twenty by offering a free iPhone 3GS. The catch is that it's for one day only... Friday, December 10.
While little is known about the deal for the moment, the free 8 GB iPhone 3GS "giveaway" applies to new accounts, additional lines and qualified upgrades. Reports claim that Best Buy brick-and-mortar outlets have stocked up to the neck to support the promotion. There's also no need to worry about fronting the $99.99 and getting the money back later as a debit card, as it will be an instant, on-the-spot rebate.
There's speculation that AT&T is experimenting with pricing in regards to the deals with both Best Buy and Radio Shack, determining which promotion would have a greater turnaround. In either case, hopeful AT&T clients would need to sign the typical 2-year (ball and chain) contract. Those purchasing the iPhone for the first time might find Best Buy's deal a bargain whereas those looking to trade up might prefer Radio Shack's incentives instead.
The two separate promotions may also be Apple's attempts to clean house and prepare for the next iPhone model slated to make an appearance in April 2011. Apple may also be trying to keep sales figures higher than Google's growing army of Android devices (roger roger). Then again, if AT&T's exclusivity is about to dry up after the New Year, this could be an attempt on the carrier's part to reel in last-minute prospects and keep current clients from drifting over to the Land of the Big Red (read: a possible Verizon-iPhone marriage).
For those looking to get an iPhone 3GS with AT&T, the carrier offers three data plans: DataPro 2 GB for iPhone with Tethering @ $45.00/month, DataPro 2 GB for iPhone only @ $25.00/month and DataPlus 200 MB for iPhone @ $15.00/month. AT&T also charges a one-time activation fee of $36.00, and monthly plans (including messaging) could cost as little as $45.00 before tacking on the data package.
So even if the iPhone 3GS is free at Best Buy for Friday only, consumers will still need to head inside expecting to shell out some cash or credit before walking away with a shiny and somewhat new iPhone 3GS.

I know its rhetorical but why would we get 2 jobs to buy a phone every year if we dont need it ?
Sorry, a minimum of $60 a month for TWO YEARS in exchange for an 18 month old handset, soon to be two generations obsolete? Oh, and $36 in activation fees. (What? In the US you have to pay the phone company to start giving them money?)
Yeah, OK. I'd like to see you try that in England. $1200 for an old phone and less than 5GB of data allowance. Wow.

You're very sad.
The 3GS phone now probably only worth less than $25.
Paying for limited data plans is total BS.
My wife pays $20 for her unlimited data plan and it's 4G.
This is one of the reasons we will NOT be leaving T-Mobile anytime soon.
Seriously we had the opportunity to change carriers but everyone else just charges more. As far as I'm concerned the point of changing carriers is to get a better deal. NOT a fancy phone. Don't get me wrong I have a nice Blackberry that I like very much but for a phone so these idiots need to lower thier asking prices if they want customers like me and my wife.

I have 2 jobs and I make 76K but I still wouldn't waist money on a new phone every year. I'd rather spend it on something else like puting that money into my investment account to make more money instead of being throwen away every year.
When I originally signed up for the 3GS, I called the customer service number after I received the first bill. I played ignorant asking what these two $35 fees were (activation fees). They apologized and removed the fees. Sometimes you just have to ask :3
Wow, cool.
Well, the knowledge of difference between 3gs to 4 is necessary, this article "The differences between iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS" detailed some info what are the differences between the iPhone 4 & iPhone 3GS.
Awesome phone. I wish mine had been free.
Maybe now the iPhone 4 is gaining much more appeal than iPhone 3GS, so it's giveaway?
I just got home from Best Buy with my free iPhone. I love the 'lol 2 generation old' comments. Every 'advancement' from the 3GS is either purely cosmetic (screen, camera flashys) or still unimplemented speed improvements (802.11n, 4G). The only substantial difference is the processing power, and seeing as my current phone was a free LG that can barely run a calculator and alarm, I'm still set up to be impressed. Where I'm at now, Virgin Mobile has been fine, but I've looked into where I'm moving to and Virgin Mobile has little service there, but AT&T does just fine (Seattle).
I signed for the two year contract, and the activation fee is going to be billed with the first month, so contrary to the article I didn't have to give any money or credit card information at all. I literally walked in and out in thirty minutes and made a phone call with it in the parking lot.
For anyone thinking about getting a new cell phone with a new 2 year contract (which is universal among all carriers if you want to get a free phone of any kind that isn't junk), this is certainly a deal.
I just ordered one of the best reviewed cases for the 3GS, the Otterbox Defender: $50 at Best Buy, but its on sale for $15 at Amazon.com!! http://amzn.com/B001FVPU9O
Santa says "hey it's sale" we want more SALE !! Cha-Ching I'm so happy I'll call you!! Lol
