Bogus Emulator Comes Packed with Trojan

A bogus PlayStation 2 emulator leads to bad times.

Nostalgic gamers wanting a little old-school action on the PC (without having to dig out the console) may want to steer clear of a recently-released PlayStation 2 emulator touted to be "far superior to all other PS2 Emulators released before it."

Chris Boyd of Sunbelt Software reports that web surfers should always be wary of "free applications" on the Internet, however the post focused on this particular emulator currently residing on various websites including Appzkeygen(dot)com and movieutilitesonline(dot)com .

Called Play 2 Emulator, the PS2 program comes in three flavors: "crack," "keygen," and "serial." Apparently-- but not surprisingly-- the files aren't emulators at all, but something more sinister.

"A pair of files will be dropped onto your PC, including a randomly named executable in the Windows directory and xpysys.dll in your System32 Folder," Boyd reports. "You’ve actually wound up with Trojan-Downloader.Win32.CodecPack.2GCash.Gen."

He went on to explain that this particular trojan has been used in everything from "fake codec scams to rogue AV hijacks in previous months, and is probably going to stick around for quite some time." He also added that, in some cases, infected surfers have reported rogue anti-virus programs appearing after acquiring the trojan.

Why are some TEXT gray on these blogs?

So perhaps someday, SONY should sell a $50 PS2 emulator for PC? ;)

You can get the C=64 emulator for free and buy the pro version. And theres an Amiga emulator.

My PS2 slim died a few months ago thanks to rough handling from my younger sister, and PCSX2 has worked just fine for playing my games on PC as a replacement. I don't bother or encourage pirating with emulators. I play just the games I have and I'm happy.

Speaking of emulation, I still see no reason why Sont can't implement software emulation of PS2 back into the PS3 with some sort of firmware upgrade. As far as I know, there is no hardware limitations.

While they're at it, bring back linux support.

I wondered that too. I usually skip over posts that are like that.

Sony isn't going to do that for two reasons. First, they are still able to sell new PS2 systems when currently owned systems fail. Second, it takes more work and focus for them to actually create an emulator that will work effectively on the current PS3 setup, something they don't want to spend money doing. I'd like them to add software PS2 emulation to the PS3 now but that simply seems unlikely to happen because of their business model.

why do they have a username then? Does it have something to do with the positive neutral negative thing on the font?

Posts made by new users are shaded gray. If a new user doesn't confirm their e-mail address, then their name will be changed to Anonymous after a period of time.

As for the trojan, it is no surprise as Kevin said. If you find yourself on a website with a name like the examples given, you should just close your browser and start over because you made a wrong turn somewhere.

I don't see how this is news at all. If you search for anything relating to software and/or gaming for an extended period, you will most likely run into it combined with the words "crack" "serial" and "keygen". One would have to be rather ignorant if they were looking for an emulator, and instead decided to download a crack, serial, or keygen for said emulator, So it doesn't surprise me who reported this crap.

They have names because when you post that way it just asks you what you want it to be.

It's not non-registered user (they have user names they are registered) gray means new user and low post count, check their post counts usually 1-2 posts.

I think that You guys are correct about users confirming their e-mail address.

Because I've made my first and second post two days ago (after following the e-Mail validation process) and the letters where black.

Reminds me of Emule (a file sharing program) you can type anything in it and there will always be some results, the more odd the thing the shorter the list becomes... For instance search for "pleasehackmycomputer" and you will find "Pleasehackmycomputer.exe" and "Pleasehackmycomputer.rar" or .zip lol Anyway always find reputable sources for all your files and programs, for emulators I stick to sites that have been around for years (not going to post them as I am sure in some small way they violate some sort of TOS)

I wanted to buy a Ps3 with ps2 capability... I need a OLD PS3 20gb or 60gb who people sale them over 350$.
It's bad when I can find a new PS3 slim for 299$. But slim model doesn't run ps2 games!
I REALLY don't know why all ps3 doesn't support ps2. THEY SHOULD!!
This is so stupid.

I can understand people going for emulator. Too bad they put a virus on the file.

I finally just bought a ps2 used for 50$... and to hell the ps3.
