Lesbian Sues Netflix Amid Privacy Concerns
A lesbian is suing Netflix amid concerns that the company did not do enough to ensure user data would remain anonymous once released and made available to the public.
Wired reports that the mother of two is suing the movie rental company alleging Netflix made it possible for her to be "outed" by disclosing insufficiently anonymous information about nearly half-a-million customers. The information was disclosed as part of the company's bid to find a more reliable recommendation system for customers.
When Netflix released the 100 million movie ratings, along with the date of the rating the company assigned a unique ID number to the subscriber, and the movie information. However, according to Wired, two Texas University students quickly identified a number of Netflix subscribers by comparing their “anonymous” reviews in the data to ones posted on IMDb.
According to the suit, the woman believes that were her sexual orientation made public, it would negatively affect her ability to pursue her livelihood and support her family as well as hinder her and her children’s ability to live peaceful lives.
Filed in a federal court in California on Thursday, the suit alleges that Netflix violated fair-trade laws and a federal privacy law protecting video rental records. The anonymous woman is demanding $2,500 in damages for each of more than 2 million Netflix customers.

Isn't her sexual orientation public now?
Tricky situation. You have to wonder how many would really know or care about her sexual orientation through Netflix? Yet this lawsuit is going to let a whole lot more people know.
Netflix is in no way responsible for IMDB's data, she choose to put reviews on both sites, it's her problem. I assume she had personally identifiable info on IMDB or she wouldn't feel she was compromised. Maybe it's her fault for what she put there or IMBD allowed more info then it should have. If Netflix only used a reference number, there is no way to directly correlate that with her.
Just another loser hoping to score a fat settlement with her baseless lawsuit. 2.5 million Netflix subscribers, plus or minus a couple she might know, don't give a crap that she is a lesbian. Second, of the 1 or 2 she might know, the probability is vanishingly small that they would have taken the time to compare quasi-anonymous released ratings to try and ascertain the identity of those posting reviews on the off chance it might reveal something incriminating. Third, the fact that she watches and reviews movies on the Gay/Lesbian list doesn't definitively prove she's is gay. Maybe she's bisexual. Maybe she's bi-curious. Then we come back to my original point NO ONE CARES. I hope Netflixs fights this and doesn't give her a cent. In fact, they should cancel her membership immediately and forever.
Ridiculous legal system to even let something go to court. She is complaining about people knowing she's gay...well I didn't know until she said it. For the kind of money these losers are making off of frivolous lawsuits, I have no problem being anything for millions of dollars. This nonsense needs to stop. Is there anyway to restore law, orders, common sense, and morals to our country?
I'm an out gay guy, and I'm not impressed. No better way to out yourself than to file a lawsuit about being outed.
I get that life can be harder for those that are gay, but from the info I see here, she over reacted. I don't see how IRL identity can be found out be connecting a Netflix profile with an IMDB profile. Granted, Netflix probably should have done a better job at this anyway so that no profiles could be connected.
Maybe there's to this that wasn't in this article, but that's where I stand at this point in time.
I don't get it. She Identifies herself on one website and posts the same review somewhere else anonymously and she expects to remain anonymous? Is that the situation or am I really missing something?
pics?
Well sometimes women do things that are irrational. And of course our judicial system supports that.
This is a ridiculous lawsuit, I hope it doesn't go through.
Hey, if I'm can win millions of dollars from netflix for disclosing my information, I'll be more than glad to be outed as a heterosexual.
What, did she rent Caged Heat 30 times or something? NOTHING is private on the Internet.
You can tell if someone is gay by the movies they watch now?
Sounds like her fault for using the same user names across the board when she didn't want her "private" movie life seen..
You can tell if someone is gay by the movies they watch now?
Brokeback mountain would be a good hint
pics?
LOLZ! I was thinking the same thing!
Lady, you shouldn't be suing, you should be celebrating! You're out now, and that's a great thing. Then again, you're a lezzy and you ladies are always angry, pissed off and want to beat us little homos up at the gay club. When you lesbians take over, we're all huddled in the corner terrified...
no, but a name like "Uncle Meat" is not going to convince anyone you're not a pervert.
You can tell if someone is gay by the movies they watch now?
Yea... since Netflix saves and lists whatever movies we have rented or watched, if somebody can get into our account they will know what is our preference on "many" things. I guess I will assume my friend's sexual orientation if I found out he/she have watched many gay movies.
Well... this is like if somebody hack in to google and find out all the keywords we used on google... they will know a lot of us in detail...
I'm not quite sure how the linked was established and exactly what informations were made public that identifies here as a lesbian, but, IMHO, this woman would have a better life quality if she would assume her sexual orientation.

Not exactly. From the article linked, the suit refers to the ineffective (if genuine) efforts from netflix to obfuscate user identity while using its userbase to data mine their personal preference and movie taste. This has nothing to do with hacking into someone's account.
Netflix won't give out your name along with your preferences in their contests. The chick's suing because she thinks it's possible to associate her name onto her movie preference profile and by extension get a hint of her sexual preferences if someone worked hard enough at it.
Not only does Toms admit that the trick used to needs rely on another external source of information used in conjuncture (imdb in this case) in which you'd have to participate in, but also that netflix did go an extra mile to ensure doing this is as hard as possible.
This is painfully obvious that it's just another get rich quick scheme bound to sink. Even the ex lawyer law professor says there's no case.
Mother of 2 ? Lesbian ?
Wow, thats one fuck up family right there.
I feel sorry for the kids, its either gonna be super gay or turn into some super fags.
You all seam to be assuming her name is being made public by this lawsuit. I see no evidence of that. My guess is that it's a "Jane Doe" suit where only the necessary participants know her name. She's only asking for $2500 so those of you criticizing her for asking for large sums of money apparently didn't bother to read the whole article. Personally, I think if her allegations are true she's owed a lot more. Netflix is very thoughtless and callous toward many of their members, myself included. They discriminate against me (and many others) by withholding new releases for weeks or months because (by their secret method of calculating) I am a heavy user and therefore unworthy of having timely access to current releases. Also, they have for years ignored the pleas of deaf and otherwise hearing impaired members to include subtitles in the movies they stream citing technology issues which are completely false. I would sue them myself if I had the money.
So if she wins does that mean I will get my share of $2,500? Or is she going to keep it all?
She's asking for 2500 for EVERY netflix customer, maybe you didn't read it so well.

Ummm, let me guess, you're heterosexual, right? Apparently you believe that being gay is a choice people make. Right again? If so then what would it take to turn you into a "fag"? Get the point? Why would anybody make such a choice given the prevalence of people like you?
But "each" doesn't specify who is receiving the money.

er no. Many families have gay parents.. that aunt, uncle, whatever. And they had children. or They were closet and did the "family" thing but were always gay, or who knows what. Also, they could be bisexual (very popular nowadays - check out your porn collection)- whatever.
You know... studies have shown that homophobes tend to have hidden homosexual desires.

That said.... SHE outed herself... on the basis that someone could somehow match an ID with her account name on IMDB. That would take a lot of work and someone has to really try to find another person. I don't know what the exact process is to make the link.
BUT, how does this out her? If she's doing "I'm a lesbian" posts on IMDB... then shes telling the world there... and perhaps with the use of google, you can find the same person posting the same info on two different sites as well.
If she HAD any real concerns about her lesbian private life - then her posts should not be "Jane Doe of New York" - whatever. Just names like we have here and on IMDB.
RAM1009, thedreadfather, Belardo, kravmaga, omnimodis78, grillz9909 names don't have any real identifiable meaning. Maybe CChick could be a lesbian (See Chicks) handle, who knows?
Don't use your real name on the INTERNET if you have concerns.
Just an FYI to ram1009. After reading this article, you missed this sentance. "The anonymous woman is demanding $2,500 in damages for each of more than 2 million Netflix customers." So basic math is saying she is wanting about 5 billion dollars. So yeah, I think its a bit excessive.
Another example of the direction this country is headed....how sad our legal system is to allow that suit to even become public in the first place. There are a million ways to keep your information secure and private online. Ex: not using your real name, not listing information in a bio, if possible a fake address or a vague one like "south texas" as your location. Ignorance should never be rewarded.
I think she pretty much "outed" herself. Silly Lesbian... dicks are for chicks.
