The National Security Agency is breaking ground for a new cybersecurity data center.

The National Security Agency is getting ready to throw together a massive $1.5 billion data center in Utah that will provide intelligence and warnings related to cybersecurity threats. The facility will also offer technical assistance to the Department of Homeland Security, and provide cybersecurity support to civilian and defense agency networks.

InformationWeek reports that the new facility will be located at the Utah National Guard's Camp Williams near Salt Lake City. The site was chosen for its communications infrastructure, availability of space, and access to cheap power. The construction will require somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 workers, however the data center will only employ between 100 and 200 workers upon completion.

Glenn Gaffney, deputy director of national intelligence for collection, said that civil liberties will indeed be protected no matter what is going on within the data center. "We will accomplish this in full compliance with the U.S. Constitution and federal law and while observing strict guidelines that protect the privacy and civil liberties of the American people," Gaffney said.

The data center in Utah will join the new cybersecurity operations center opening its doors in Arlington, Virginia on November 30. This facility will house the National Cyber Security Center, the National Coordinating Center for Telecommunications, and the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team.

yeah, so it was the eavesdropping affair that, BTW, is still going on...

but this time... every time we fart it will be recorded and analyzed in Utah. I already feel much safer!

Wow 1.5 billion to be able to warn congressmen not to open attachments from email offering to enlarge their manhood.

Seeing as how the NSA and the larger federal government sees privacy laws and the Constitution as road blocks to keeping each American in a tiny box. I'm amazed they would come right out and lie about it not being used to track all traffic on the internet illegally.

Didn't China just build a petaflop super computer for only $88 million?

Hmmmmm...I thought China is developing the capability to hack into and destroy our military command centers. I think it's well-worth the monies to defend against this. Unlikely, as caffeine is a required substance for l33t computer users, as they will all be, and Mormons cannot consume caffeine.

Why can't Mormon's consume caffeine? I drink stuff with caffeine in it all the time and I'm Mormon...

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (Mormons) can drink caffeine, they can do whatever they want just like everyone else. Consequences will ensue, like everything else. If one becomes addicted to the caffiene, they are breaking what is called the Word of Wisdom, which explains the health and mental benefits of not drinking alcohol, smoking, and doing other hard substances, or getting into addicting habits. By not following the Word of Wisdom, members do not get the blessings promised them.

I find it interesting that Utah was chosen as the site for this complex. The state has put great emphasis into its data capabilities. The cities and local goverments put funds together a while ago and have rolled out fiber optic networks, treating the connection as a utility. Want 100 mbps connection? You'll find it in Utah, it's even offered free in some areas. This speed is along the fiber network though, not to the world wide web.

In my opinion..

Yeah..just like the way certain people are doing their utmost to change or erode those laws? Just like the way certain political as well as corporate, interests are 'developing' the 'Internet v2', and in doing so turning a largely public system into a private, corporate one?

All this technology. All this talk. All this action..the end result is what: the erosion of our civil liberties and our way of life, together with our right to do protest en masse?

..After all, it does seem apparent that the horrific tragedy that was 9/11, couldn't have come at a better time for some people. They certainly did well out of it, in many ways.

Will this data center assist in auditing the Federal Reserve System? I doubt it, somehow.

The cure is the disease as far as some people are concerned..and if you think the right to say those things - to express an opinion as well as hold certain political dissent is protected under law - think again; plans are already in place to change that right, make no mistake. So please continue, America..put the Halloween masks on..switch on the TV/computer, and let the adverts stream away..you're in capable hands and 'change is good'.

I should also note that I find it utterly..utterly ironic, that we have a data center purporting to look after national security, when one only has to travel South to witness the absolute sham that is commonly known as the border between Mexico and the United States.

No feasibility study is required, just an honest, open minded individual willing to listen to - and represent - the needs and wishes of the majority, of the American people. I reckon that most American's are so sick and tired of being lied to that they are flat out BORED of hearing about these fancy new schemes that claim to make their country a safer place. They live in the real world, not the world of spin and lies, and they've also been at the receiving end of it..broke, destitute and down-trodden I just wonder when that pot of gold is no longer flowing.

However, if you'r young, gullible and seemingly 'educated', you may well see this an some form of opportunity to further your career path.
