Metro-Board's Electric Skateboard In Action
Warning: Video Contains Shocking Footage Of Someone Who Doesn't Know How To Skate
Metro-Board brought their Electric Skateboard series of remote control boards to CES, and we at Tom's Hardware bravely stepped up and risked life and limb (sort of) to find out for ourselves how well it works.
Steered by a single hand remote, it reaches top speed of 19 mph, consumes 600 watts of power with a LiFePO4 battery that can go for about 15 miles before needing a recharge. Featured here is the 41" Longboard model. For the CES demo, they limited speed to 5 mph in order to avoid crashes, which was probably for the best.
Metro-Board's gadget will not make you better at skateboarding, as you'll clearly see in the clip below. It is fun, however, and easy enough to use assuming you have better balance and coordination than we did. That said, it's worth mentioning that the $535.00 price tag could also buy a cheap street legal scooter or a tablet. Check it out below and let us know what you think!

Lame.
I want a street legal tablet!
After seeing the warning, I was fully expecting someone to either faceplant the floor or fall backwards or some other horrific accident.
I am thoroughly disappointed.
Not much of a controller for the board either and very disappointing. Slow and doesn't seam stable.

Helps to read the article before commenting, it goes up to 19mph, it was limited to 5 at the show to prevent crashes. No need to ever go faster than 19mph on a freaking skate board, you are askin for broken bones, skull fractures, and a coma if you do.
A true 15 mile range is great however going to their website I see several models and the $545 price tag is for the lesser range SLA battery version. The LiFePO4 battery versions are several hundred dollars higher than that figure. For a inexpensive EV it's fairly lightweight (if you don't mind lugging around 20 to 25 pounds) and it's compact not anywhere as heavy or bulky in size as my electric powered bike. However I feel comfortable already with my electric bike.People whom ride skateboards may like this though especially youth.
