Happy Birthday Mario! Here's Your Red Wii
Nintendo is going Mario-red in celebration of the icon's 25th anniversary.
In celebration of Super Mario Bros turning 25 this month, Nintendo is releasing a Mario-red Wii bundle in Japan on November 11 for ¥20,000 (around USD$240).
In addition to the awesome Mario-red Wii console, the bundle will include a special copy of Super Mario Bros pre-installed on the system that features gold coin blocks branded with the number "25" (instead of the typical question mark). The bundle will also contain the new Wiimote Plus peripheral--revealed weeks ago during Nintendo's press conference--that combines the Wii Remote and the MotionPlus add-on, also decked out in Mario-red.
Nintendo revealed that it is also releasing additional anniversary-themed products in Japan such as the Mario-red Nintendo DSi XL, a Mario-red Nintendo DSi, and a limited-edition boxed set of Super Mario All-Stars. Currently there's no word on whether these products will head to the US (which is likely), however Super Mario All-Stars is slated to hit Europe on December 3 containing an additional CD soundtrack and “retrospective DVD.”
In related news, the new Wiimote Plus--as previously mentioned-- will arrive separately in Japan on November 11. The device will be priced at ¥3,800 and come in Shiro (white), Kuro (black), Ao (blue), Pink (erm pink), and Aka (red). This new controller will become the standard pack-in accessory for the Nintendo Wii, replacing the older model starting November 11.
Nintendo also announced that a red Nunchuck will launch on November 11 for ¥1,800, joining the current white and black models.
Currently there are no North American dates set for the products mentioned above.

Growing up in the early 80's...playing Super Mario Bros all day - before and after school. Just reminiscing...so nostalgic. *sigh*...no bills to worry about, no kids or women to worry about...all you thought about was beating this game. Yet 25yrs later, it is still so much fun. This game appeals to anyone - even my kids love it. I'd have to say perhaps this is the only game that has transcended generations.
kinda cool in a novelty kind of way. if it came to the us and i was in the market for a wii then i might be persuaded to spend the extra scrath on this
Where is the Green one for Luigi!
Poor Luigi
hehe
Happy birthday Mario!
.... who's Luigi!? (joke)
looks ugly.
I still have my origional Nintendo with Mario 1-3 at my house and anytime I have parties, people LOVE it, even hot chicks. Not sure if this version will have the same attraction, but the origional games are quite fun. No saving, no reloading, just straight play.
The Black Wii is cool looking, but the red one not so much.
I grew up in the 90's but I still remember playing Super Mario on my Game Boy Color. Good times!
Happy 25th, Mario!
Yep, Mario came out when I was 4. My cousins had a Nintendo right away (They're rich). I really loved playing it. I remember having dreams about playing it when I was a kid. Then eventually my parents bought one for my sister and I. I loved playing Super Mario, Duck Hunt and Blades of Steel. Ever since then I've loved games. I really don't think I'll ever stop playing them either.
I grew up with the 64. I did, though, get to play the original ones. I can tell you, form all the previous mario games before NCG, I can say the 80's and 90's gaming was the best. Now, you have crap games with,"oh,so coll graphics that are three-dimmentional", BS. I want to see more classic games, I want to see the real red deal, I want my MTV!
JK'ing on the MTV BTW.
