Front Camera, Skype Confirmed for WP7.5 Mango
Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" supports front-facing cameras and eventually Skype integration for video chatting. However, the latter feature won't arrive until after Mango lands on consumer devices.
While we already know that Microsoft's "Mango" build of Windows Phone 7 is already in the hands of manufacturers, a new report concerning the update reveals that, going forward, devices sporting Windows Phone 7.5 will feature a front-facing camera and Skype integration for video calling. The news was confirmed on Thursday in a session at Microsoft Tech-Ed 2011 in New Zealand.
Three Windows Phone 7.5 devices have already been spotted in the "wild," one prototype from Asus, one nearly-complete device from Acer (the M310), and Fujitsu's IS12T which actually launched as the first 7.5 smartphone today in Japan. The Acer and Asus phones reportedly sport front-facing cameras; the just-released Fujitsu phone does not.
Earlier this year, Microsoft inadvertently made its intentions to compete with Apple's FaceTime service perfectly clear by referencing to a "portrait camera" in the Windows Phone 7 SDK. That said, news of the new front-facing standard provided by the Mango update isn't surprising.
As for the Skype integration, this feature actually won't be a part of the Mango update. According to Microsoft, the front-facing cameras supplied in Windows Phone 7.5 devices will support the Skype integration, but currently it's unclear whether Skype will arrive in the form of an app, or integrated later in a post-Mango OS update.
Microsoft's Mango update gives Windows Phone 7 the boost it really needed from the start including multitasking, support for Internet Explorer 9, better social networking integration, hands-free messaging, support for front-facing cameras and more. But will it be enough to pull consumers away from Android and iOS devices?
Earlier this month, comScore revealed that Microsoft's share of the mobile market actually declined after the release of Windows Phone 7, starting at 8-percent in the first quarter of its release, followed by 7.5-percent in the second quarter and 5.8-percent in the third (ending June 2011). But one thing the comScore report didn't point out was that there are currently only eight Windows Phone 7 smartphones on the market. These include the HTC Desire, the HTC Arrive, the Samsung Focus, the LG Quantum, the HTC Surround, the Dell Venue Pro, the HTC HD75 and the HTC Trophy.
But that's going to change with the release of Windows Phone 7.5 as we'll see in the next few months. Microsoft reportedly wanted Mango in the hands of consumers by October knowing that many wireless subscribers were coming out of their 2-year contracts, and looking for a new phone or upgrade. Google is feeling the exact same heat, pushing to get Android "Ice Cream Sandwich" out the door in October too.
Surprisingly, the world's first Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone – Fujitsu's IS12T – doesn't sport a front-facing camera, but does offer a meaty 13.2MP rear-facing camera. It's also water-proof and comes in black and two flashy, neon colors.

This is a start, windows 8, once it's here, and if they make a phone as good looking as the iphone 5, i'm gone.
My last winmo phone was winmo 6.5, I upgrade to winmo 7 chances are I don't care about winmo 7.5.
When is it coming!? My Kin 2 m is very stupid, it keeps freezing and I want to buy a new phone, asap. If the Mango isn't promised by October, I'm getting the iPhone 4...
I am really excited about this. With Samsung making a WM7 variant of the Galaxy S2 I am looking forward to getting this phone. Previous version of WM were utter crap but WM7 definitely has my attention and I knew that the Skype acquisition would bring this. Personally, although I very much like the IPhone, I feel like facetime leaves a bit to be desired. Skype has always been extremely reliable and their HD Voice codec that they use not to mention that transactions between the client are encrypted is just a solid solution overall. I am surprised they did not adopt the idea of licensing their technologies to everyone. Better yea, how about they just go create a Skype RFC.
wp7 isnt winmo as it existed on older phones.

I here ya!! One of these days I'm gonna 'Office Space' my Kin2. The ONLY reason I got it was cause it was Verizon's (at the time) only phone that had built in Wifi not requiring a data plan.

WP has the best looking interface, apart from shortcomings of OS (many of which were addressed in Mango), the biggest disappointment has been the quality of hardware, so I fully agree with your assertion they need to get some nice looking smartphones based on Mango out in the wild asap. I think sea ray looked very nice, and if the final product turns out to be as good as, I will happily send my SGS to dustbins of history

I am with ya there. Nice to have some slick alternatives. They need to get their app count up but I believe this OS has some serious potential right with some well designed hardware behind it.
It is really a great OS for a first attempt; Mango will bring it up to speed, and then whatever comes next will be more innovative. Personally I think the thing that holds it back most is the fact that the only good phone (harware anyways) is the Dell Venue Pro. And as sweet of a phone as it is, there is simply better hardware elsewhere on the market.
Mango will make WP7 a good OS, they just need a good platform to launch from.
I'd really like one now. With iOS's fenced-in ecosystem and Android's sluggishness/malware, WP7 is the only hope I have left.
Been with android since day one owned g1, galaxy, and now g2x this phone is extremely fast and powerful but android is a flawed system as soon as windows gets there beast I'm switching I believe great things are about to come from windows.for every negative article you read about windows not making it just remember a couple of years ago when they said xbox36o wouldn't make it now its num.1 seller every month. So get ready pepole!!
