Google VP: Nexus Specs "Exclusive" to Googlers
So how 'bout that Nexus One?
Everyone is talking about the phone Google has been handing out to employees. Dubbed the Nexus One, details about the device are scant. We know it's made by HTC, and is devoid of any physical keyboard but has a trackball. Aside from that, we don't know anything and according to one Google's VP, we're not going to know anything for at least a few more weeks.
In a blog post published Saturday, Mario Queiroz, Vice President of Product Management at Google, explained a process known within the company as dogfooding. Dogfooding is basically speed testing. They ask employees to test a product and in turn they get fast feedback. All that out of the way, Queiroz explains the latest project employees have been dogfooding.
"We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it."
Sounds very intriguing, Mr. Queiroz. Sadly, that's all we're getting. "Unfortunately, because dogfooding is a process exclusively for Google employees, we cannot share specific product details," Queiroz said. "We hope to share more after our dogfood diet."
Given that the title of the post is "An Android dogfood diet for the holidays" and all recent reports say the device will see a January launch, we probably don't have long to wait.

track ball? weak.
best phone ever...byebye iphone.
best phone ever...
isn't that a little premature?
This might be wishful thinking, but if this phone comes out for Straighttalk, that could be the wooden stake through ATT/Apple.
track ball? weak.
Apparently someone is jealous of the BlackBerry, or has never used one.
I hope they don't call it Purina.
Looks like a professional version of the HTC Hero. It also looks like it will be more comfortable in a pocket than the hero or iPhone (more curve to the edges and no outward dimple around the trackball).
its gonna be from at&t, its definitely not the best phone ever unless they can get it for Verizon
Isn't "dogfooding" just a nickname for the concept of "eating one's own dog food"? Which is the concept of using what you make for others?
I had a look at my friend's phone yesterday. It is pretty impressive. It has a better look & feel than my iPhone 3G.
The things that stands out:
1. the photo gallery connects to picasa and gets the photos for you
2. the navigation app is really good
3. camera/flash is impressive for the device of its size
4. virtual keyboard better than iPhone 3G.
5. track ball is pretty useful
6. the screen appears to have a higher resolution (than iPhone 3G) and very sharp
The four functions on the bottom of the screen are not very responsive, atleast from my experience. There is no pinch zooming. It is very hard to not have it once you get used to it.
