Gmail Users Make 1,000,000 Phone Calls in a Day
Gmail users have been a chatty bunch over the last day or so.
Google this week added the ability to make phone calls via Gmail and it seems everyone has been having a wonderful time trying out the new feature; the company revealed yesterday that, during the first 24 hours the feature was live, Gmail users made more than a million phone calls.
Though the service has only been rolled out in the United States, it would seem American Gmail users are taking advantage of the fact that calls inside the U.S. and Canada are completely free. Google announced via Twitter that the first 24 hours has seen over 1,000,000 calls made. However, the company didn't provide any information on how many of those were paid calls to people outside the U.S. and Canada, and how many were freebie calls to those inside North America.
Google also unveiled Google Voice phone booths earlier this week. The company will be installing the charming, red booths in universities and airports around the country in an effort to get people to try making calls via Google Voice in Gmail.
We've all tried out the service, making phone calls to people in the same room, or to other, out-of-office editors. The sound quality is decent, definitely on par with Skype, but we found that it sometimes took a couple of tries to get the recipients phone to actually ring. This was despite the fact that the person making the call could hear the person's phone ringing via Gmail. Hanging up and trying again usually fixed things up for us. Have you tried it yet? Let us know what you thought of the experience!

Google should just have their own carrier. Really like their voicemail feature.
You should give it a try if you haven't.
What about encryption? That is all I care about, I am tired of these companies and governments invading my privacy!
they don't need a carrier if they just use voip, voice over IP is really cheap you can sell 2 cents a min and make a profit.
worked as well as Vonage. Sound was good andf the called party could not detect the call was made from a computer
works great! i use it on my droid2 phone all the time, for incoming and outgoing calls.
I tried phone calls to my cell phone today, the calls completed and the connnection and sound was very clear. When I dialed out with Google the phone rang immediately, it took longer for the phone being called to start ringing. There was a few seconds delay in what was being said and when it was heard, the same thing was true when the other person talked to me. I like it very much and plan to use it now
Thanks Google, it is a wonderful free phone service. I will recommend this to everyone I know.
I try to call someone and they can't hear me. I can hear myself through my headset and Google can see, through GMail, that my mic is working, but the receiver of the call can't hear me.
I like the service and the technology Google has. I'm big supporter of google. But.. I can't help it to wonder about my privacy. Think about it. When you had an email account, you were somehow anonymous (at least beyond your ISP.) Now you've tied in a home\Office\Mobile number (and Credit Card) to your Gmail account which gives google valuable formation about you. This reminds me of how Microsoft has monopolized the PC technologies in the 90s. Google is now monopolizing the profiling information. All I'm saying is that we should be naive and full blindly for free services without a cost benefit analysis.
can somebody correct that it is 1,000,000 calls from all gmail users in total? i was like WT.... until i read the story! i know 1,000,000 is a lot for one person in a day but things happen... just when you see lady gaga on the top songs you know everything is possible.
Not available in Canada yet, but I assume it'd be much like any other VoIP. Half of them don't end up ringing on my phone. We'll see how much better Google Voice is once its up here.
I have been using Google Voice almost since its inception to make phone calls using my cellphone(Cellular now ATT where you can accumulate rollover minutes) to call the UK at a cost of 2.1 cents per minute. Two days ago I used the upgraded service from Google (from the UK! to the US)from my laptop and was surprised that I got a connection and was also struck by the quality of the sound.
Google is too damn awesome. Yea there are privacy concerns, but the reality is any company you deal with with these services you'll have to same feeling. And it's oddly unsettling how it's all free. You'd think we'd all just be tickled pink? We are a suspicious bunch. But the fact is, their services are awesome. Well done Google. Now play nice!
Not many people were using VoIP on a global scale, I only use it for cheap international calls.
Now that Google brings it on the mainstream users I fear that it will draw a lot of attention and it will bring taxation and regulations along. There are just a lot of money that get away from taxation and by using the infrastructure of the telecommunication companies for free
Just watch....There going to start charging.
Prank calls for the win!!!!!
Someone at Google is a Dr. Who fan. I thought Jane posted a photo of the TARDIS.
I guarantee every one of those phone calls is recorded. If you make a phone call through Google then you have a few screws loose.
If Google added actual cell phone towers or if wifi were ubiquitous enough-i would sign with them. it would be legen...wait for it..
I have made 3 phone calls today from it
I plan on using this, Thank you Google!!!

... dary!
I smell a lawsuit, as the look of the Google booths are extremely close to those designed for the what was the GPO in the UK and what later became BT. Can I say design copyright and infringed !!
@das_stig - I'm from the UK, I don't think anybody will mind, most people in the UK love seeing these as they have largely been phased out, as long as they are true to the original in terms of quality, ie. they don't look like a cheap copy I don't see a problem.. it's more of a subtle nod rather than a piss take.
Watch Idiocraty, we will have voice adds while talking in a near future.
people are using a free service... shocking
I tried it out and it worked flawlessly. I am curious to see how many of those calls were PAID calls. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of those calls were inside the US. I wonder if the few paid calls covers the costs/overheads of the FREE inside US calls... (or will inside the US eventually cost something as well) ... time will tell

I am sure Google knows this already and will make appropriate design changes to eliminate potential lawsuits before implementing this in the UK.
i just bought 10 dollar of call credit or my gmail so that i can make international call but when i tried to make a call it is cahrging me from the begining, i mean from ringing and i havent been able to make a single call and i have already lost half of my money, than i tried calling myself but no same thing again money gone nothing and i even didnt receive a call, my phone was not even ringing.
Jbardige, I am so glad it worked for you but it doesn't for untold thousands of others like myself. I am running windows 7
with no firewall other other issues.
The chat setting is set correctly to my microphone which is working perfectly. Everything in my control panel is perfect.
Everything on my computer is perfect. Everything is so perfect that I can make phone calls from my computer to people's phones using Skype and they hear me perfectly and I hear them perfectly and it is wonderful. It does cost 2 cents a minute which I guess is not the end of the world, its just that I don't like it when I can't get things (Google) to work.
I have un-istalled and re-installed gmail phone and that didn't help. I have phoned 12 different people and here's what happens: It rings perfectly with wonderful sound. I can hear myself in my earphones in high quality. The other party picks up the phone and says hello and I hear them in wonderful quality, even better than normal phone. But then they hang up after saying is anybody there. I can hear myself in my earphones say please don't hang up, but apparently THEY CAN'T because they hang up. I have confirmed I am not transmitting sound by calling my own phone. It has become one of the great mysteries of our time, one John, that I doubt you can fix, but perhaps you know someone who can? I had the same problem with Skype but they suggested a fix which fixed my problem. That's because I pay and they have a place to email for actual real technical help. Google has no technical help that I know of, otherwise I would get it fixed. I have seen dozens of other people in the same boat while searching for a cure on the internet. But all they and I get are BASIC obvious suggestions like yours that do not help the problem. I devote 3 or 4 hours a day to solving this problem, which I know effing well is a mere dll swipe or some such thing. In the meantime I would like to form a club or gmail phone users who can't be heard. Please fell free to join.
