Source: BlackBerry Tablet Due This December
BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) is working on a tablet that should be on the market in time for the holidays.
There have been rumors about an 8.9-inch BlackBerry tablet for a little while now and it looks like those rumors just got a little weightier. Boy Genius Report claims to have confirmed with several sources that the tablet will be strictly a “companion” device for your phone. If you remember the Palm Foleo, a device that looked like a netbook and was designed to help users view and edit, among other things, emails and office documents, you'll know what these people are talking about.
BGR goes on to clarify that the device won't have any built in cellular radio and will rely on a Bluetooth or WiFi connection to your BlackBerry smartphone.
A little different to the Foleo, the focus of the device is said to be multimedia rather than business. So, if you find browsing, watching video, reading books and looking at photos on your BlackBerry just isn't up to scratch, then maybe this is a for you.
BGR's sources say the device is scheduled for a December launch but hints that hard work could have it out before then. However, they also said that before the iPad, RIM had plans for a monochrome, ereader-type device. If that's already been scrapped, the fate of this companion device may not be set in stone just yet.

Thumb me down, but I'm not really all hyped up about all these tablets anymore. Great idea by Apple to make tablets a trend n all.. But after reading so many articles about tablets, every manufacturer is pretty much offering the exact same thing "MULTIMEDIA". I'm fine with just a light notebook and a smartphone. I don't see these things as a necessity that requires me to spend a couple hundred bucks when entertainment is found pretty much everywhere.
They should call this the "Blackberry SuperStorm".
Or the bPad.
Or Blackdorid. Nah, that isn't PC. Call it the RIMDroid.
is te black pad! hahahahahahahaha

As much as I love my Tour, I can't get excited over tablets no matter who makes them. I use my BB as a work device (email and looking up bits of info I need) and occasionally as a GPS. I just really can't see myself ever needing or wanting one of these tablet toys and I too see most of the excitement just as a result of a hype feedback loop and not really filling a void in my life. I will admit I want an Asus 101MT netbook, but I'm going to wait for the first revision and for the Linux gurus to get the issues worked out with multitouch before I get one.

I agree. I thought that was the point of these PDA/smartphones. If you want something bigger, then get a laptop. Tablets are not necessary especially if they can't do anything but show movies or web.
RIM release a multimedia tablet when it has a strangle hold on the business market? I doubt it. I've owned BlackBerries since before they were phones. Expect their tablet to berunning whichever version of OS6 is out at the time. Also to exchange data seemlessly with other BB devices. I could definetely see them "linked" in that if say I have to type out a long email I'd use the tablet but send it on my Bold. Viewing a speadsheet on my Bold sucks but would be perfect on a RIM Tablet. Edit it on the tablet when transfer it to my Bold automatically. I don't buy RIM releasing a soley multimedia tablet. RIM can't take Apple head on what they can do is release a tablet that has the business function of a Bold but with the addition of watching movies, web browsing, etc on a bigger screen.
Blackberry tablet is something I don't expect, but either way I'm with the first poster; I'm sick of tablets.
I think that tablets would be cool if they came with a stylus and allowed you to write and take notes and use them like paper. It would be even cooler if when you're done taking a page of notes it digitizes the page that you finished writing while loading the next page or something. I would find that useful cause you could take it with you to meetings or classes in school, have digital notes that you could put up on your workstation when you get back. I really liked the concepts that the Microsoft courier had, but they scrapped that project.
I can't get excited about tablets either.
Am I understanding this correctly? The device will really just be an extension of your BB? More reason to look at a netbook.
I want a tablet with out any reference to a 2 year contact that cost what my netbook did at $399.
A blackberry tablet sounds cool, but the lack of apps makes me want a windows 7 based tablet, this thing will be useless.
