Apple ''iTV'' Losing 1080p Playback, Gaining Apps

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The latest Apple TV rumors suggest Apple could be about to do away with 1080p and rebrand the product iTV.

Apple normally launches new iPods at a special event in the fall, but this year could be a double whammy. According to an exclusive report over on Engadget, the Cupertino-based company is going to launch a refreshed version of Apple TV. However, the company is also said to be giving Apple TV the 'i' treatment.

Engadget's trusted sources say that, aside from a $99 price tag, an A4 CPU, 16GB of flash storage, and the ability to stream content from the App Store, the new Apple TV will be dubbed 'iTV'. However, that's not all they were told. iTV will apparently not have the ability to play 1080i or 1080p video. Instead, owners of the device will be watching 720p clips.

There'll also supposedly be an App Store, in case your TV watching experience isn't complete without Bejeweled, but there's no information on whether or not users will be able to play iPad or iPhone apps on their tellies.

They talk about issues in screen size for apps between the iphone/ipod and the ipad, what do they think will happen when people put those apps on a 42 inch screen....

What I get most from this is that in a way Apple is actually entering the home console market.

don't worry.. when they release a newer version next year, they will add in 1080p and say they pioneer it.

ha i already predicted this, considering the iPad was an iPhone without the phone aspect (no speaker and mic), the iTV is just a natural progression of this, an iPad without a screen.....

OMG the penultimate natural eventual progression of this would be... a brick

lol! no actually, its like they are following that joke that came out with the ipad: "ipad is just a bigger iphone" this is the next logical progression! "the iWall, (tv is the screen) which is just a bigger ipad without the touch screen."

and this would all be well and good except that ios sucks...

its basically a clone of the google tv idea (that runs android right?) except of course... it will be able to do 1080p...

That's kind of silly, I'd rather have 1080p playback.

You're watching it wrong.. just because Jobs can't see the difference between the -Apple standard- and 1080p, doesn't mean I can't!

I want choice! OH OH OH OH OH OH!

Apple engineers have determined that its customers don't need more than 720p. According to Ydon Tchablowme, senior VP of Apple Television marketing, "Our research has shown that, since we don't offer Blu-Ray, our customers are actually quite used to not seeing truly high-definition content. Why not save money (for Apple, not the customer), by not supporting 1080p? It just makes more sense that way (for Apple, not the customer)."

Weegee64 :
Agnickolov is right... Apple is positioning iTV as a home gaming console with some multimedia capabilities. This could easily challenge nintendo, since the Wii is very similar to iTV spec-wise, minus the motion controls. Also, the Apple apps will be cheaper than a full $50 game; great for the casual gamer. Apple is not foolish enough to leave out 1080p if iTV is meant for only tv. The 720p will enable higher fps in games as well. Nintendo is already getting owned by iTouch in the mobile gaming market; now their console is going to have competition as well.

Except the Wii has already run it's life cycle pretty much, there isn't anything to steal away, everyone who wanted a Wii has one. Even though there's no announcement, Nintendo's probably already working on their next console, I mean, everyone else is going to have a motion sensor gimmick now, the Wii is losing one of it's major sell points as it is.

The idea that apps are a replacement for real games is an absolute joke. The reason they're so cheap is because there's not a lot of effort put into most. Those totally expensive 50$ games have full dev teams behind them, the only thing Apps would take away are the casual gamers. If they want cheap games, Wii and DSi both have their own cheap minigames to satisfy simpler minds. The only thing apps have over other games is the content delivery. There's nothing stopping Nintendo from announcing their own new system with 1080p and downloadable content as soon as the iTV comes out, and with their superior first party and better third party support (than Apple at least), they'd win that fight easily.

I am guessing it is 720p because the price is coming way down. At $99 that is a pretty serious decrease for apple.

Still, this is a terrible product. I cannot think why you would want to lock yourself into iTunes for TV programming.

So, yeah. I really love Apple products, but I am really sick and tired of them limiting the potential of every product they put out. Why didn't the 3GS have a front camera or a higher quality main camera? Why don't iMacs, Mac Pros have ESATA? Why didn't the iPad have more memory or a front camera? Why does this new iTV not have 1080p when it's called i_TV_! They constantly make a great product that is 90% of the potential it could be.
