Acer's New Iconia Tab A200 Packs Tegra 2, ICS Soon

- By - Source : Netbook News

Acer has released the Iconia Tab A200 tablet featuring Nvidia's 1 GHz Tegra 2 SoC and Google's Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" OS.

On Friday, Acer announced the official release of the Iconia Tab A200 10.1-inch tablet. Units shipping in select countries now will come packed with Google's Android 3.2 "Honeycomb" OS whereas those shipping worldwide in January will feature the newer v4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" version. However consumers who purchase the Honeycomb version this month will receive a free upgrade to ICS when the second batch ships next month.

According to the spec list, the tablet will sport Nvidia's 1 GHz Tegra 2 dual-core SoC, 1 GB of RAM, a microSD card slot for adding extra storage, and either 8 GB or 16 GB, depending on the model (and your wallet). The 10.1-inch multi-touch screen will also have a default resolution of 1280 x 800, backed by a 3260mAh battery that promises an average standby time of 400 hours and 8 hours of video playback.

Also present will be a front-facing 2MP camera for video chatting (no rear-facing camera, sorry), 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, a full-size USB port and Acer Ring, the company's proprietary multitasking manager that provides shortcuts to Netflix, Google Maps and other applications. The tablet won't feature an HDMI output port, but it will offer Acer's own DNLA solution called Clear.fi for sharing and watching media on other DNLA devices.

"Priced right and looking sleek from all angles, the ICONIA TAB A200 stands out in Titanium Gray or Metallic Red," the company said in a press release. "The rear side is soft to the touch and features an eye-catching pattern. Made especially for multimedia enjoyment, this tablet packs hardware and apps for loads of fun. Visuals are fantastic on the generous 10.1-inch multi-touch screen, and even thrilling games run smoothly thanks to the Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core 1 GHz processor and gyrometer."

Acer did not provide actual availability and pricing, so stay tuned.

With Tegra 2 they better be going after the $199 market.

When is Tom's going to bring us news about the Samsung Windows 7 tablet?

I saw it today in JB Hi-Fi. $1500 for a 10-touch screen, 10.1" screen, i5 1.6GHz and sadly crappy intel integrated graphics.

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of progress spec wise with this tablet. Hopefully progress has been made on reducing the pricing, increasing android's potential market share.

What is the difference between this and their current 10.1" Tegra 2 tablet?

This is just a cheap mutilated version of their current A500 tablet. Unlike the A500, this
A200 doesn't have a rear camera with LED flash and it has only 8gb internal memory. A200 also lacks the durable and sleek brushed aluminum body.

I gotta say.. I didn't think much of the "hype" on tegra 2 becuase, well..I'm a benchmark whore; but i just picked up an acer a100 and it kicks ass (189 best buy black friday:) and I got my old man an asus transformer and it soo kicks ass. granted they are "only" dual core tablets, but I'm really impressed with how snappy everything is and how great the functionality is overall. I'm loving it. I just hope they'll let me get my Ice Cream Sandwich on :D and it's looking like the hardware will obviously run it, which is pretty sweet.

Heh, so they just made a nicer looking version of their existing Tegra 2 tablet. This isn't going to be of any use against the transformer 2, xoom 2 etc. Makes you wonder what they've been doing since they finished on the last one. Maybe they will have a Tegra 3 based tab coming too?
