The Helix Midnight Luxe is a perennial contender in our best mattress for side sleepers guide for its top-notch pressure relief for side sleepers. However, after testing it myself a couple of times within the past two years, I want to give it kudos for also being an excellent bed for side (and back) sleepers with back pain.

Here's what you need to know about the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress before you buy it in this week's Helix mattress sale — and if you're like me and have recurring back pain, there's an upgrade I recommend that'll make it even more comfortable.

Superb pressure relief for side sleepers — but that's not all

The Helix Midnight Luxe is among the best hybrid mattresses you can buy, designed for side sleepers who need optimal pressure relief for their hips and shoulders. It has a medium firmness rating — a 6 out of 10 on Helix's scale —to create a 'just right' feeling that balances comfort and support.

I slept on the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress during a couple of trips and was impressed by how comfortable it was to sink into at the end of long, busy days. When I travel, I sometimes face uncomfortable hotel beds that aggravate my lower back and legs. The Helix Midnight Luxe was a bona fide hit — I woke up refreshed and pain-free every morning.

Even more impressive was how I managed to sleep soundly... on my back! I am a natural side sleeper, so in theory, the Midnight Luxe is made for me. But the raised pillow top fit the nook of my lower back nicely — and combined with the targeted lower lumbar support, I was able to doze off whilst staring at my ceiling.

But don't worry — I also slept on my side and found the Midnight Luxe just as cozy in that position. The reinforced lumbar area complemented the softer areas that eased the tension in my shoulders, hips, and knees. This tracks with what my fellow testers experienced when they reviewed the Midnight Luxe — and it remains our top recommendation for side sleepers.

The Midnight Luxe is a great mattress for back pain if you favor your side. However, there's an upgrade I strongly recommend if you want maximum relief from your aches.

The ErgoAlign upgrade is worth it if you have recurring back pain

It's been months since I last slept on the Helix Midnight Luxe, but in that time, I've yet to find a mattress that comes close to delivering the same level of blissful relief from my aches. Plus, as a natural side sleeper, I've yet to feel as comfortable sleeping on my back. (Yes, I'm surprised by that, too!)

However, I should note that the Midnight Luxe I slept on during my travels featured an ErgoAlign top layer with ultra-dense foam in the midsection to further support and relieve pressure from the lumbar. As someone with regular lower back pain, I found this made the difference between a good night's sleep and an excellent one.

This upgrade adds another $187 to the cost. However, if your lower back pain is constant to the point of disrupting your sleep, I think the ErgoAlign will be a welcome addition to what's already a cozy and supportive bed. Otherwise, if you don't have regular back pain, the reinforced lumbar support that's standard with the Helix Midnight Luxe will be more than enough.

Even without the upgrades, this is a luxury mattress with the price to match — but I have an alternative to share if you're hoping to spend a little less.
