'The Housemaid' was one of my favorite movies of last year — and now you can finally stream it for free on Prime Video

"The Housemaid" has been one of the big surprise hits of 2025, and for that matter, 2026. Since coming out on Dec. 19 of last year, it's brought in an impressive $398 million and already has a sequel in the works. So there's a chance that, if you're reading this, you've already seen it.

But if you're like me, this movie got lost in the end-of-year madness, and then "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" came out in theaters in January. TL;DR: I simply missed it. Luckily, I had been sent a Blu-ray of the movie. So, I popped it in my Panasonic to see if I could recommend this erotic thriller.

Starz (via Prime Video): was $11.99 at Amazon

Starz may not be on our list of the best streaming services, but there's no denying it has great movies to watch. Especially now that it's added "The Housemaid." Our biggest gripe with Starz is that it's $12 a month. But right now you can get it and stream "The Housemaid" (and more) on Starz through Prime Video as part of a free 7-day trial.

Amanda Seyfried steals the show in this erotic thriller

If you know nothing about "The Housemaid," here's the rundown. Sydney Sweeney stars as Millie Calloway, who's just been hired to be the live-in housemaid for the affluent Winchester family. She's hiding a dark secret, though, one she's still not sure that Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) hasn't already figured out. Especially since Nina seems to be torturing her, leaving it up to Andrew Winchester (Brandon Skelnar) to defend Millie from Nina's torment.

Spoiler alert: This movie rips. It's an absolute blast to watch. It's thrilling, doesn't take itself too seriously, and is very easy to digest while still delivering some shocking twists and turns. I know I just gave you a rundown on what "The Housemaid" is about, but I can also reveal to you that nobody in this movie is who they seem at first.

That said, this thriller, fun as it is in its own right, lives and dies on an incredible performance from Amanda Seyfried. She absolutely steals the spotlight any time she shows up on screen. Sweeney and Sklenar are both good in their roles, but Seyfried acts circles around them in a performance that highlights a surprising amount of range for what seems like just another crazy woman in a psychological thriller.

Honestly, between this movie and "The Testament of Ann Lee," I'm ready to declare Seyfried the best actress of 2025.

Verdict: 'The Housemaid' is a thrill to watch, and a no-brainer with a free trial

To be clear, I'd pay more than a monthly Starz subscription to watch "The Housemaid." In retrospect, I'd have paid full price to watch it in theaters while it was in wide release.

But you don't have to pay full price. Right now, you can try out Starz on Prime Video free for seven days. If you don't already have Prime Video, you can try Amazon Prime free for 30 days right now, which comes with a Prime Video subscription. Once you have that, you can then activate your Starz free trial and stream "The Housemaid" for free.

If you don't have Amazon Prime, it will cost you just $4.99 for a month of Starz. That's cheaper than what it costs to rent the movie digitally from Amazon, and you still get to watch all the other movies and shows that Starz has to offer. If you come to like Starz, the $4.99 a month promotional price is good for your first three months, so don't feel like you need to cancel right away.
