Windscribe has upgraded its entire server network with next-generation infrastructure – here's what that means for you

Windscribe's entire VPN server fleet now supports its "FreshScribe" next-generation infrastructure. The upgrades have been slowly rolled out over the last year, but Windscribe is now confident enough in FreshScribe's "superior performance and stability" to switch its entire server network.

The provider has been a long-standing challenger to the best VPNs and boasts one of the best free VPNsWindscribe Free. The host of benefits this upgrade brings sees it reinforce this challenge.

A new implementation of WireGuard for improved performance

In its announcement blog post, Windscribe detailed how it now implements the WireGuard protocol in a new way.

When the provider first adopted WireGuard in 2020, it utilised Cloudflare's implementation, Boringtun. However, Windscribe's internal testing saw reduced performance and Boringtun has been replaced with "a kernel-space implementation of WireGuard."

The kernel-space is where your device's operating system runs. Moving to kernel-space implementation means a more streamlined process and improves efficiency. Extra communication steps are removed and improved performance can be expected.

As a result, Windscribe's internal testing reported improved speeds, performance, and jitter.

The provider has been very vocal on X, sharing its impressive speeds. Most recently, it reported speeds around 2,000 Mbps for download and upload.

This data is from Windscribe's own internal testing. We don't know what the set up is, and we haven't yet seen these speeds ourselves, but the results look promising.

Our most recent speed tests saw Windscribe record a very respectable 840 Mbps. However, not all servers had been upgraded at the time of this test.

Although we can't corroborate its 2,000+ Mbps claims, it's very likely you'll see a speed improvement as a result of Windscribe's server upgrade.

Windscribe said users have reported that "jitter has been eliminated." Jitter is the delay in receiving data packets and can mean unstable performance, especially when gaming.

According to Windscribe, users have also reported improvements in streaming performance. Although a VPN can't control every single aspect of streaming speeds and performance, Windscribe said it made some changes. Users have since reported "better streaming performance" following this move – something we will investigate in our next round of testing.

The new server infrastructure underwent a third-party privacy and security audit back in the summer of 2024. "Minimal security concerns" were found and all findings that posed a potential risk "were promptly remediated."

Privacy and security upgrades

Alongside the server switch, Windscribe detailed a handful of privacy and security upgrades.

The kernel-based WireGuard implementation supports all of Windscribe's AmneziaWG features. This is the provider's anti-censorship protocol, enabling obfuscation. It reported anti-censorship success in Russia, China, Iran, Egypt and the UAE – countries where VPNs are either illegal or very heavily restricted.

Windscribe Pro and "build-a-plan" users will soon have full access to IP address pinning and IP address rotation. This allows you to either have the same IP address each time you connect to a location, or rotate it without disconnecting from your VPN server.

The feature is currently available on the beta version of Windscribe's desktop VPN apps.

Zero-knowledge connection configurations, multi hop, and IPv6 support – which is "actively being worked on" – will also all be coming soon.

IPv6 is a newer internet protocol designed to replace IPv4, where addresses are quickly running out. Many VPNs, including NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Mullvad, now support IPv6.

Zero-knowledge means configurations bypass Windscribe's centralized database and travel directly to the VPN server. This improves privacy and reduces maintenance.

Finally, multi-hop routes your VPN connection through two servers rather than one. This means an additional layer of security and Windscribe says you'll be able to double hop your traffic to any location.

Windscribe is currently running a Black Friday sale, with a one-year Pro plan available for $2.42 per month ($29 up front). It runs until December 8, 2025, and if you keep your subscription active, you get to keep this price.
