If you're a legacy ExpressVPN user, you have until March 31, 2026, to update your VPN app. Without updating, you'll lose access to your VPN and your privacy may be at risk.

As one of the best VPNs, ExpressVPN is a class-leader when it comes to privacy and security. However, it now only offers its features and enhanced performance on newer apps.

Update your app to the newest version

ExpressVPN has apps for an array of platforms. Most users will already be running the latest version of its VPN apps, or versions new enough to support new features like post-quantum encryption and Lightway Turbo.

ExpressVPN has released a list of the necessary app version required for each platform:

If you don't have automatic automatic updates enabled, you'll need to click Update when prompted by your app or download the newest app version from ExpressVPN's website.

What will happen if you don't update?

To put it simply, your ExpressVPN app won't work.

ExpressVPN said "On March 31, 2026, ExpressVPN will retire older security certificates, which act as the 'digital keys' for your app."

Following this date, legacy apps will be unable to establish a connection to ExpressVPN's servers. Your internet will still work but you'll be unable to benefit from VPN protection. Your IP address and internet traffic will be visible to any watching third-party, such as websites or your internet service provider.

How to find your app version

For most platforms, navigate to your settings, click Help & Support or Help, and select About or About ExpressVPN. Your app version will then be displayed.

On Linux, open your Terminal and type "expressvpn- -version" and on Aircove Routers, head to Advanced Settings then Software Update.

A note for Linux and router users

ExpressVPN is transferring Linux VPN support away from its CLI app to its new GUI-based app for "a more intuitive and feature-rich experience."

Legacy CLI app users will need to move to the GUI-based app to maintain connectivity. ExpressVPN said the CLI app "uses the older certificate infrastructure and will not be compatible after the cutoff."

If you have an Aircove router, it will automatically update if connected to the internet. You can check your dashboard to ensure you're running the latest version.

If you've manually configured ExpressVPN on a third-party router, ExpressVPN said "you may need to download new configuration files" after the migration.
