How I used Gemini AI Studio to build 5 fun apps — including a meow translator
Gemini now lets anyone build custom apps with its new AI APIs

Gemini AI Studio just dropped 17 APIs that anyone can use for vibe coding. From Nano Banana to real-time transcription, AI Studio now gives vibe coders so many more ways to plug Gemini into their own apps.
You can try these tools for free within the standard limits on usage, tokens and daily requests. Go beyond those, and you’ll need either pay-as-you-go pricing or a premium subscription, which starts at about $20 per month. If you plan on vibe coding a lot, I have to say, it’s totally worth it. The ability to add these powerful AI tools quickly and effortlessly to any app, has taken my creativity to a whole new level.
Here’s how I used five different APIs to build completely unique apps — all from one prompt and a little imagination.
Meow translator

The Translator API can handle dozens of human languages, but I decided to use it in a more creative way — to “translate” my cat’s meows. Obviously, this was just for fun, but it turned into an entertaining experiment in prompt design and sound recognition.
Each meow got analyzed, labeled and turned into a dramatic (and often ridiculous) English phrase like “You forgot my breakfast again” or “This spot is now mine.”
16 x 9 Image generator

Finally — an app that automatically turns any picture into a perfectly sized 16:9 image. As someone who constantly resizes photos for web stories and social posts, this tool feels like a lifesaver.
I can either describe the image I need or upload one I already have, and within seconds it generates a properly formatted version ready to use. It’s simple, fast and surprisingly accurate. Honestly, I wish I’d built it sooner.
Scavenger hunt designer

Using the Google Maps API, I designed an app that creates scavenger hunts from your current location. I can add whatever I want like “Find one red fire hydrant and one yellow one” or let Gemini do all the designing for me based on whatever is in my own neighborhood. I’m looking forward to trying this out with my kids this weekend for screen-free fun.

Gemini audio reader

With the text-to-speech API built into my design, I created an app that can read any document I upload — out loud. It’s basically Speechify on my own terms, with no subscription or limits.
From long emails and PDFs to scanned letters and even snippets of snail mail, it turns text into natural-sounding audio in seconds. The best part? It only took a few minutes to build, yet I can already tell it’s going to become one of my most-used tools for multitasking and staying productive.
Side hustle idea generator

The holidays are coming, and let’s be honest — a little extra cash never hurts when you’ve got gifts to buy and family to spoil. So I built an app designed to spark side-hustle inspiration.
Just type in a few keywords like “graphic design,” “teacher” or even “dog lover,” and it instantly generates creative, realistic ways to earn on the side. Whether it’s launching a small Etsy shop, offering local pet portraits or testing out freelance gigs, the app serves up ideas I might never have thought of, and some that are tempting enough to actually try.
The takeaway

After experimenting with just a handful of Gemini’s new APIs, it's clear just how accessible “vibe coding” has become. These tools are not just for developers or coders, they are actually for anyone with an idea that can be described in a few words.
Sure, the apps are very basic, but they get the job done. I made these in a few minutes but each app can become more sophisiticated depending on how much time you want to spend. They can later be uploaded to a platform like GitHub to be shared with others.
The 17 APIs can be dropped in manually or Google AI will add them in according to what the AI thinks the app needs. Whether you’re translating your cat’s meows, designing scavenger hunts or whatever else you can imagine, Gemini AI Studio makes it possible to build something clever in minutes.
