OpenAI’s leaked GPT-5.1 ‘Thinking’ model could outsmart Gemini 3 Pro — here’s why that matters
The leaks suggest we are in for a treat from OpenAI and Google
I’ve been waiting for Gemini 3.0 to roll out like a kid waiting for Christmas day. At the same time, OpenAI is quietly preparing another major AI upgrade and it could arrive just in time to steal the thunder from Google’s upcoming Gemini 3 Pro. Which one will officially launch first is anyone’s guess.
Traces of a mysterious new model called GPT-5.1 Thinking have surfaced in ChatGPT’s backend, hinting that OpenAI is getting ready to launch a version of its flagship model optimized for deeper, more deliberate reasoning. That’s a big deal, and it may be a direct response to Google’s plans to release Gemini 3 Pro, which promises multimodal smarts and long-context memory — whenever it officially rolls out. I reached out to Google this week, but the company's lips are sealed.
BREAKING 🚨: GPT-5.1 confirmed as new traces of "gpt-5-1-thinking" have been spotted on ChatGPT. Gemini 3 vs GPT 5.1 soon 🥊 https://t.co/npmNxIWm6W pic.twitter.com/qAN1p655ckNovember 6, 2025
Although the name “Thinking” might sound a bit gimmicky, if the OpenAI model lives up to the early leaks, we’re looking at a smarter, slower more strategic version of GPT.
In other words, this is the kind of upgrade that could once again reshape how we use AI across both personal and professional tasks.
What is GPT-5.1 Thinking?
The clues in the X post above show GPT-5-1-Thinking listed among other ChatGPT model variants. While OpenAI hasn’t made any official announcement, the name alone suggests a shift in focus beyond better performance and toward how the model reasons.
This could mean a few things:
- Multi-step reasoning: the model might break down your prompt and “think” through it before responding.
- Thinking budgets: It may spend more time or computing power on harder tasks, much like a human would pause to consider a tough question.
- Better context handling: OpenAI could be tuning this model to understand nuance and ambiguity more clearly, similar to Claude’s recent chain-of-thought upgrades.
OpenAI’s secret weapon against Gemini?
All of this is happening just as Google prepares to launch Gemini 3 Pro, a major step forward in its AI roadmap. Early signs suggest Gemini 3 Pro will come with a massive 1-million-token context window — ideal for long documents, code and complex projects.

So while Google is betting big on memory and scale, OpenAI seems to be betting on cognitive depth; the ability to reason, reflect, and deliver answers that go beyond surface-level smarts.
Why this matters
If you’ve ever used ChatGPT and felt like the response was almost there, but not quite deep enough, this model might change that. GPT-5.1 Thinking could be especially useful for:
- Tackling complex questions or brainstorming
- Summarizing documents with nuance
- Planning step-by-step tasks or projects
- Reducing hallucinations in long reasoning chains
And for those using AI in professional or enterprise settings, OpenAI may offer different “flavors” of GPT: lightweight “Mini” models for speed, “Thinking” models for deliberation, and possibly even specialized models for coding or search.
Bottom line
With no official rollout date, GPT-5.1 Thinking may be headed for a soft launch. Usually the newest models are available first to top-tier subscribers. It’s unclear whether it will replace GPT-5 completely or sit alongside it as a new tier of intelligence. In the most recent livestream with OpenAI, Sam Altman specifically stated that he doesn't foresee GPT-4o sunsetting anytime soon.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on Gemini 3 Pro, which is expected to arrive later this year with full multimodal support and deeper Google Workspace integration.
