The Eye-Fi Card, a 2 GB digital camera memory card that can connect to your wireless home network, has won one of Macworld’s prestigious Best of Show awards. The Eye-Fi Card also captured the “Last Gadget Standing” award at last week’s CES expo in Las Vegas.
The Eye-Fi Card’s wireless component turns on with your camera and automatically detects your wireless network. Of course, there’s encryption (static WEP 40/104/128, WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK) to ensure that your neighbors aren’t also receiving your photos. Once connected, photos are automatically uploaded to your preferred folder. All of the options are controlled by the Eye-Fi Manager interface on your computer, which enables a quick four step setup, along with adding networks, changing folder or website destinations, and adjusting settings.
Yes, I said “website destinations”. If you’d like, you can set up the Eye-Fi Manager to automatically upload your photos to well over a dozen public sites, where you can then order prints or share your photos online. The Eye-Fi Manager examines each picture and, if necessary, resizes it to comply with the destination website’s size requirements. The current list of public sites includes Facebook, Photobucket, Shutterfly, Webshots, Flickr, Google’s Picasa, Windows Live, Walmart.com’s Photo Center, Costco.com’s Photo Center, and more.
The suggested retail price of the 2 GB Eye-Fi Card is $99.99, and it’s available for both Mac and PC. The uploading service is free and unlimited. You can find out more at www.eye.fi. All in all, a clever use of the Finnish top level domain, and an innovative use of wireless technology.
