MobilityGuru uses specific terminology when talking about portable computers. The standards that appear in the following table help keep us precise and honest when talking about such machines, and explain how we classify these types of devices.
| Type of Mobile Computer | Weight (Pounds) with standard battery | Size (Width & Depth Inches) |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) | Less than 2.5 | Fits in standard size pocket |
| Ultra Lightweight Laptop | 2.5 or less | Does not fit in standard size pocket |
| Lightweight Laptop | 2.6 to 4 | NA |
| Standard Laptop* | Over 4 to 6.5 or less | 13 x 11 and smaller |
| Notebook* | Over 6.5 | Over 13 x 11 |
* Weight or size or both weight and size qualify a mobile computer for this category.
At 3.3 pounds including only the unit and its standard battery (3.93 lbs with brick and power cords), and with dimensions of 10.82" x 9.25" the X610 fits nicely within the bounds of our lightweight laptop category. When one of your reviewers schlepped this unit from Los Angeles to Austin in his laptop bag along with an ancient Dell Inspiron 3800, he barely noticed the added weight (nor did it cramp the confines of the laptop carrier either, though it did make life more interesting when clearing security on the way home).
This unit is pretty well-suited for those who must take their computers with them on the go, and who must be able to plug in or power up and get to work at a moment's notice. It boots up surprisingly quickly and it's small and light enough to be usable on the pull-down trays you'll find in most economy seats on any airline nowadays. But alas, the screen is only so-so and works best in lower ambient light situations (working in strong daylight or full sunlight is challenging, to say the least).
