12. PCMark05 Benchmarks, Continued

PCMark05 Performance Benchmarks Conclusions

Graphics aside, the PCMark05 scores for the WinBook X610 just edge out the average values for the four 1.2 GHz laptop systems, and generally sit between half and two thirds of the values that the HP Pavilion 4000 attains. As with the four 1.2 GHz laptop systems the lower scores for the WinBook X610 make sense given a slower CPU and related hardware.

With a PCMark05 graphics performance score of 580, the X610 comes close enough to the 600 score minimum that we decided include it in the PCMark05 graphics chart. Only two of the four 1.2 GHz machines have the graphics controllers (in this case Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 900) and display resolution (at least 1024 x 768) to run the PCMark05 graphics tests. These are Fujitsu's Lifebook B6110D and Toshiba's Portege R200. So, they are the only ones of those four laptops included in the PCMark05 overall score. The graphics performance for these two systems is so low that, in line with the policy stated in the previous section, we don't report or chart their graphics test results.

At 2700, the hard disk score for the X610 stands above the average for the four previously tested 1.2 GHz CPU laptops. The WinBook has a 4,200 RPM drive with an access time of 12 ms and an 8 MB cache. The drives in the four laptops also run at 4,200 RPM and have only 2 MB of cache. The Fujitsu B6110D's drive has an access time of 12 ms. Access time for the other three is 15 ms. The B6110D achieved a PCMark05 hard disk score of 2544; about right considering its smaller cache. The HP DV4000's winning hard disk score of 3211 can be attributed to its disk's higher rotational speed (5,200 RPM) and larger cache (16 MB). Access time for the DV400's disk is 12ms.
