For more on the methods we use to assess a mobile computer's features see How We Test Laptop and Notebook Computers for Home and Office .

These two computers fall into our home and office laptop category. They are best for running applications such as Microsoft Office and a Web browser. Based on our tests, both the Fujitsu B6110D and Toshiba R200 will run such applications exhibiting decent performance and long battery life. Unlike some lightweight laptops and low cost notebooks, these mobile computers use Intel's 915GM/GMS and 910GML graphics chipset. This allows them to do more complex 3D graphics. However, as our PCMark05 tests demonstrate, their graphics performance is very modest.

Both laptops come with 512 MB of RAM memory. Maximum RAM is 2 GB on the Fujitsu and 1.25 GB on the Toshiba. Though adding more RAM will decrease battery life a bit, it will also improve performance with many applications and when you are multitasking.

The disk drives on the Fujitsu (40 GB) and the Toshiba (60 GB) provide lots of real estate for programs and data. We were especially impressed with the Fujitsu B6110D's disk performance. We attribute this performance advantage mostly to the Lifebook disk's 12ms access time as opposed to the Portege disk's 15ms access time. We regularly use Norton Ghost on each test computer to create images of the C: (boot) drive after we install a test suite. This allows us to switch quickly between test suites without having to reinstall a suite. On the Fujitsu it took what seemed like no time for Ghost to backup or restore an image from the second partition on the same physical drive as the boot drive. Our PCMark05 hard disk drive tests supported our subjective perceptions of the drive's fine performance.
