So this is what happens when AT&T has its way.
There is a 2 GB data cap on the plan, which will not result in overages, but attempt to slow your data downloading habits down by slowing the connecting to a crawl until the next billing period starts. This unlimited plans is priced, including unlimited voice calling, at $80 per month. T-Mobile said that this plan is only offered for a limited time: There is also an unlimited voice plan with 200 MB of data that is priced at $80 as well as a 1000 minute plan with unlimited data for $90.
What strikes me is that T-Mobile can call this plan "unlimited." I am also not quite sure how carriers can advertise their fast networks and then basically tell their consumers that they really can use them only for a portion of their contract time every month. T-Mobile states that it's not drama since smartphone users use anyway only 1 GB of data every month. However, if that is the case, why does it make sense that the bandwidth is cut from 5GB to 2GB? It should not really matter if there is a 2 or 5GB plan, if its customers aren't using the bandwidth anyway.
Why don't we call it what it is? A way to tell consumers to be more appreciative of the bandwidth that is provided and prepare them for price increases for more bandwidth. That's fine as long as a level of competition is maintained, but dancing around a not so sexy topic and telling customers that less service is actually good for them is just silly.

And here comes the almighty At&t hammer
I am so glad I have my 79$ plan with T mobile that is 1500 mins and unlimited txt and Data for the next 2 years hopefully by then they bring back unlimited data
The limits are exactly the same as AT&T's. I guess that says something.
And here comes the almighty At&t hammer
Sigh, it was bound to happen. Lets just hope verizon and sprint can now attract more costumers that dont want anything to do with at&t anymore.
AT&T can bend over and screw itself.....
With that being said, my service, Alltel just got bought by AT&T and my true unlimited plan was supposed to be "grandfathered" in with AT&T.... yea, right.. 4 gigs max.....
I think mobile phone providers just passed car salesman and is neck an neck with lawyers.
Here in Thailand I get unlimited Internet for $20 - included with the normal voice and SMS service. If the T-Mobile plan is worse, then I call it sub-third-world network service.
If you are in the States, you may be surprised how much better the public bus and other services elsewhere are - more comfortable to
Just surprised no one complains about this - it's as bad as paying $20 for a McDonnalds hamburger (with a 2 year contract).
Wait- I don't get this- think about it- an unlimited plan- but your capped at 2 GB- doesn't that mean it's a limited plan?
What strikes me is that T-Mobile can call this plan "unlimited."
What strikes me is logic over emotion. Just because they slow you down, doesn't change the fact that it is unlimited. Slow, yes, but still no absolute cap. You might argue that since it is slow there is a finite amount of content you can download until your next billing cycle, which is true. However, there is always a limit to how much content you can download in a given time period, regardless of speed. So technically, no, they are not lying when they say unlimited.
Lol, vodafone UK for £25/month. 500min, Unl Txt and Unl Data
And North American Telecommunication Service drops another notch. Is it any wonder why the United States and Canada are at the bottom of the barrel in almost every benchmark when we allow our telecom providers to run wild. I can still remember when publicly owned companies were the norm, prices were low, expansion was mandated, the people were the shareholder and sole benefactors and service was excellent. Compare that to what we have now and tell me again why privatization was so good for the consumer. Liars and Crooks all.
thats why phones should only be used for making calls and texts.
privatization = lobby
Well im with sprint and UNLIMITED means UNLIMITED and its still cheap + at least in my area the service is great
lol.... UK giffgaff = 250 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited data.... £10 a month PAYG!!!

What strikes me is your attempt to defend this. The definitions of "unlimited" is without limits (as the name implies). When you start limiting the speed or the amount data you can access, the you are not unlimited. That's logic.
By your definition there are no speed limits when driving since you can go any speed you want until you get caught. Does that sound unlimited?
AT&T can bend over and screw itself.....With that being said, my service, Alltel just got bought by AT&T and my true unlimited plan was supposed to be "grandfathered" in with AT&T.... yea, right.. 4 gigs max.....
Alltell was bought by Verizon.......
Lol, vodafone UK for £25/month. 500min, Unl Txt and Unl Data
I'm afraid not. They scrapped their unlimited plans last May: http://www.bitterwallet.com/vodafo [...] mers/29230
lol.... UK giffgaff = 250 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited data.... £10 a month PAYG!!!
Yeah giffgaff seem to be the only 'network' left to offer anything that could even be close to being called 'unlimited'. From what it seems, you have to download more than 100mb a day for them even to start thinking about asking you to tone down your use. I don't want to have to pay full price for my phones though and I don't use that much data either as it turns out even though I'm what most would call a 'heavy user' - 5.2GB since November 9, 2007.
Alltell was bought by Verizon.......
"On June 5, 2008, Verizon Wireless announced it would acquire the majority of Alltel Wireless in a deal valued at $28.1 billion. The merger was approved by the Federal Communications Commission on the condition that Verizon divest 105 Alltel markets. On May 8, 2009, AT&T announced it would acquire 79 of the divested wireless properties, including licenses, network assets, and 1.5 million current subscribers, primarily in rural areas across 18 states."
It was bought by both.
Absolutely Insane!
Sigh, it was bound to happen. Lets just hope verizon and sprint can now attract more costumers that dont want anything to do with at&t anymore.
I don't get it. Verizon's plans aren't any cheaper. Why is Verizon considered the good guy here? IMO, Verizon and AT&T (and now T-Mobile included) are just the same.
At least with Verizon you get great coverage and awesome speeds (especially 4G LTE). Sprint lies by calling WiMax 4G, it's more like 3.5G. : )
When my contract is up, I'll be switching to Verizon. Too bad, I used to like T-Mobile.
I miss the times where unlimited actually meant "no limits"
well in bulgaria my plan is unl data 1000mins free call 50 free sms and mms for 15$

Spot on!
There is a saying, every country deserves their leaders. In this case, greedy corporates, and politicians letting them do as they wish with evident "benefits" for the people.
"Anonymous to Sony way" might be one of the courses of action to take. Simply vote with the wallet is the other, but they will still make their big big cuts from those that go "meh, I don't need 5-10 GB/month", and whenever any small competitor tries to do what technology today allows, unlimited and/or low price, they will just low the price till the competitor gets out of business, or buy them out.
... "sub-third-world network"... that's a great way to put it. May I quote you on future articles on traffic limitations by providers?
Vote with your green! Sadly few seem to use that freedom and keep on paying and paying overcharges!
so now for unlimited... that leaves sprint... and only sprint, guess I'm stasying right where i'm at, but if they take away me unlimited everythign i'll probably just swap back to a dumbphone with txting plan, when are they did back in 1984.

That's what I did, but where I live the problem is way worse.
I love still seeing the T-Mobile ads that rip on AT&T.
you (the article author) don't understand the term "bandwidth", do you? It is a rate (per time) not an amount summing up...
