3. Software Installation

Up and running: Installation of the Twain-compatible driver appears to be completed

Installation is in two or three steps. First, the Twain-compatible device driver and then the Scansoft Paperport SE application software must be installed. The scanner should now be up and running. "Should" being the operative word, because we discovered, contrary to the claim in the handbook, that we still had to install the USB UART bridge controller manually after the first reboot. Without it, the scanner won't run or isn't recognized with Windows XP.

No dice without the driver for the USB UART bridge controller

Since the Docupen's driver is based on the Twain standard, the scanned data can be read from the scanner by any other Twain-compatible picture editing program such as Windows Imaging or Adobe Photoshop.

Another reboot and we're off

Software

The software is made up of two applications. The first component is the Twain driver. This enables access to the pen's memory bank. With the aid of the driver and/or the driver software's graphical user interface the data can be transferred from the scanner to the PC. You can see which documents have been loaded onto the PC in the application window. The lower bar also shows how many pages have been saved in the scanner's memory bank and how much memory is still free.
