8. Quake III

Quake III 1600x1200x32 - WOW! Running in the 8100's native 1600x1200 resolution the Mobility Radeon smokes the GeForce2 Go, before it even gets off the starting line. With the ability to almost produce three times the frames of the GeForce2 Go, the Mobility Radeon 7500 really flexes it muscle on this benchmark.

Quake III 1024x768x32 - 71.1 is an impressive score at the this resolution, but the GeForce2 Go at 43 frames is playable as well. We thought that the 7500 did produce a little crisper image than the GeForce2 Go did on this benchmark. At this resolution we found the GeForce2 Go to be very playable, but still had room for improvement.

Quake III 1024x768x32 FSAA - FSAA is a challenge for most desktop cards let alone a GPU in a notebook. While the 37.9 FPS of the Mobility Radeon 7500 might seem slow, it isn't when you play it. It looked good and played well, but again we still felt that it was slow, but then again we play too many games on high end desktops to really know if it was us or the laptop. The 20.1 score of the GeForce2 Go, wasn't really that bad considering, but we still felt that the 7500 did look better.

Battery Life

DVD Battery Life Performance - We took the Warner Brother's DVD title Driven and used Dell's included DVD playback software to test the DVD battery playback performance. We made sure that the laptop had a full 24 hour period to charge the battery and then booted the system. As soon as the system was booted we started the movie in continuous playback mode. When then timed the amount of time till the system shut down or ran out of battery power. This figure is given in hours and minutes. The ATI with it's better DVD playback technology was able to squeeze an additional 33 minutes out of the battery over the GeForce2 Go. You can almost double this time by removing the floppy drive and adding a second battery. Although, the battery will add some extra weight, the laptop will then yield little over five hours of DVD playback. Impressive performance for the Mobility 7500 and the Dell 8100.
