As far as features go, it's difficult to imagine how the test device could be improved. In fact, only where the choice of a graphics subsystem is concerned do we see real room for improvement: THG recommends that users who run graphic-intensive applications go with the 64 MB variant rather than the 32 MB video memory.
The price tag on the T40 with all the bells and whistles is a whopping $3199 US (in Europe: €4590) (net). This price, though, includes a hard drive with double capacity (80 GB).
For comparison purposes, we brought the L3C from Asus on board. It is driven by the 2.2 GHz model of the Pentium 4-M, in other words, the "predecessor" to the Pentium M. As a glance at the weights of both devices shows, it's possible to produce comparable computing performance (see below) and significantly longer battery life with a Pentium M notebook, which is, in addition, considerably lighter. All in all, a system based on combining a Pentium M CPU and an Intel 855 chipset gives a far higher level of mobility than a comparable Pentium 4-M system.
To demonstrate how this is possible, the following section gives an insight into the architecture of the new Pentium M (Banias) processor.
