PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.0 Now Available

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The PS3 Slim firmware is available now for your PS3 Phat.

As promised, Sony has released the 3.0 update for its PlayStation 3 firmware. This new firmware is available for all current PS3 consoles and will also be provided out-of-the-box for all the PS3 Slims.

Firmware 3.0 includes tweaks to the Xross Media Bar, network improvements and personalization options.

Sony also listed these additional highlights from update 3.0:

  • “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section for the latest updates in a more visually oriented format.
  • Status Indicator – In the top right corner will be an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages.
  • Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
  • PlayStation Store Shortcuts – A handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
  • Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. A dynamic theme incorporates animated objects into the background.
  • Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content.

Engadget also discovered a couple of other small usability tweaks: simultaneous audio output across connectors and control of video playback (slow motion, fast forward and rewind) using the right stick.

Update now using the system update feature on your PS3!

I wish they would include more video codecs in their firmware updates. I hate trying to access a video off of my network only to discover it is an "unsupported format."

The biggest update (for me) is the PS3 can now output to multiple audio destinations. It's utterly useful as I have optical out hooked into the surround sound system and no longer have to manually switch between Optical & HDMI. This is great because my other half is neither technical and doesn't understand how to switch the audio out despite repeatedly showing how to do it. Now it automatically outputs stereo through the HDMI connection to the TV and surround through optical and I don't have to worry about coming home to a PS3 that's been broken with by someone who doesn't get it, lol.

Yawn. How about updating that crappy half ass browser or stop advertising it as a feature. I updated and immediately I wasn't able to log into the Playstation Network although that seems to be fixed this morning. I can't tell that anything has changed besides the "Friends List" being slightly re-designed.

When will Sony leave the USB ports hot when the unit is in standby? My Wii can do it and is my charger for my controllers for the PS3.

The only feature I'm waiting for is audio chat with friends while in any game. A step in the right direction would be audio chat while in the same game (this is beyond just the game supporting it).

The PS3 slims are not shipping with 3.0 out of the box. At least the early ones did not ship with it. Not even 2.8, which I had to update my slim to last Thursday.

now they should add backwards compatibility with ps2 games but thats not nearly as important to me(its just annoying to have to unplug my ps3 to play ps2 games)as getting more games.

cpike84 is correct. PS3 Slims are shipping with FW 2.76. Also, PS2 compatibility is no longer a really hot selling feature. I think Sony has done the right thing by taking the PS2 compatibility OUT of the PS3 - it allowed price drops, and PS2 compatibility is less of a selling feature now than it was when PS3 launched.
