PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.70 Gets Chatty

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Yet another PlayStation 3 firmware update is upon us, and this one adds new chat functionality.

As detailed in the PlayStation Blog: The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

Sadly the PlayStation 3 is still unable to hold a persistent voice chat session from the XMB into a game.

Other new features of the new firmware include the ability to sort PSN friends by online status, as well as the ability to attach files up to 3 MB in size (up from the previous limit of 1 MB).

Those who use the video download service on the PlayStation 3 will also now be able to back up purchased videos to an external storage device. Backed up videos can be later restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – surely something appreciated by those who have smaller or already-filled drives. Also, videos purchased for PSP may now be transfered to the PS3 for playback.

The 2.70 firmware update is due soon. Those who regularly access the PlayStation Network will be alerted as soon as it’s available upon the next login.

What is with wifi being so slow on the PS3....it's horrible.

Updates have typically only taken a few minutes, so no worries there.

The bigger problem I've got is that in my circle of friends only 2 of us own PS3's... everyone else thinks they're still too expensive.

I guess I should add that I've got wired gigabit in my house... so I don't have the wifi problem (obviously)

stop whining about the little stuff, and for those that thinks its too expensive thats a good thing. If everyone had a PS3 it wouldnt be as exclusive and or cool as it is. Only those of us that have one are the sh%& those that cry about it being too much. Get a job or get 2 work hard and stop crying like a little girl. I worked my butt off for what I have. Core i7 940 at 4.2 ghz, 30 inch panel at 2560 x 1600 and a MGS4 PS3 last summer with 10 games and 25 blu ray movies and counting, also a 46 inch Samsung LCD 1080p so get with it whiners!

hey its really a tough choice now on what system to get. get a xbox 360 with its high failure rate so you know there's a good chance it will crash on you and have to send it off for repairs maybe more than once in its lifetime. or spend an extra 100-200 dollars for a system that has better quality hardware wise and has mostly the same games as the xbox 360.

don't get me wrong the PS3 has its failure rate's too but i am willing to bet it is not as high as the 360

better late to the game than never i suppose

once ps3 said that psn and xbox live were different, i can barely tell the difference now. looks like their business plan failed

well the one big difference is you do not have to buy a subscription to access the PSN network. that's a big advantage.
