Barcelona (Spain) - Microsoft has acquired Danger, a mobile software company best known for its work with T-Mobile’s Sidekick handsets.

Danger, a privately held company, has gained notoriety for its entire suite of mobile software including Web browsers, application management and communication. It also powers premium mobile services like music and ringtone downloading.

"With all the excitement about what’s going on in the company right now, this is critical to our future and decisive for our future," said Microsoft’s Robbie Bach, who heads the company’s entertainment and devices division.

At a Microsoft investor conference last year, Bach emphasized that the company was going to take a stronger interest in the mobile phone market. Microsoft’s "entertainment and devices" division has had an almost exclusive focus on its Xbox brand since its inception but it has recently been working on expanding its scope.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
