School Took Thousands of Private Pics of Students
More details emerge from the case against laptop webcam spying.
New information has risen from the Lower Merion School School District Webcam-spying case, showing that administrators responsible for managing the MacBooks have taken thousands of images of students – sometimes even while they were sleeping or partially dressed.
Lawyers for 15-year-old Blake Robbins, who started the class-action against the school district, said that 400 pictures were taken of the boy over a two-week span. Evidence also shows that administrators took screenshots from IM conversations between students. The motion names school district technology coordinator Carol Cafiero as one who may have been behind the pictures, saying that she "may have been a voyeur."
Cafiero refused to answer questions at a recent deposition, citing her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. But email records show that a colleague had emailed her, saying that watching the webcam pictures was like "a little LMSD soap opera."
"I know, I love it!" Cafiero replied, according to the AP report.

Its my opinion that when some one pleads the fifth, they are guilty. The worst part in all this I think is the waste of tax payer dollars in order to do all this. I agree the schools computers should have software to filter out naughty content or even limit what programs run, but to spy on people is a different subject and one that is a touchy one at best.

jeez, people who don't go to the school think its a bigger deal than those that go there. blake didn't pay the insurance on his laptop, thus the computer was categorized as lost/stolen and it was standard procedure to take pictures from the computer if it was lost or stolen to determine where it was. Now the fact that they didn't confront him ever and just kept taking pictures is a whole other issue, but the software on the computers themselves was perfectly within the rules.
