It's coming next week!

We first learned about the new iPhone OS 3.0 on St. Patrick’s Day, and it showed that Apple was intent on keeping both the original iPhone and iPhone 3G relevant with new features such as landscape keyboard, MMS, Spotlight universal search, among others.

Much of what’s new in the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 was detailed in this past article, so click here to read it again.

The news of the day is that the software will be available worldwide and free to all current iPhone owners on June 17. iPod Touch owners will be able to upgrade for $9.95.

While the software will be out on June 17, not all mobile carriers will be supporting all of the new features. 29 carriers will be supporting MMS when the software launches next week, but oddly enough, AT&T isn’t one of them. Apple said that AT&T will support iPhone MMS “later this summer.”

Another thing that Apple unveiled was that the iPhone would also tether to a PC or Mac via either USB or Bluetooth. 22 carriers would be supporting tethering at launch, but AT&T was notably absent from the list.

Of course, nothing will run the new iPhone software better than the upcoming iPhone 3GS, but OS 3.0 is a pretty sweet ‘free’ upgrade for all existing iPhone users.

I hope Rogers up here in Canada allows MMS and tethering... it be nice to finally do this stuff.
It also would b nice if my friken bill wasn't $102 a month for a 5 gig limit.

Oddly enough, ATT still doesn't give a crap about its new customers who signed on to have an IPHONE, or prior customers whom happen to own an IPhone. They already charge ridiculous amounts of money for texting and internet/data, and have too many dropped calls/network holes in populated areas. Now I kind of wish aapl would change carriers and maybe att will suffer some. My bill is $100 for unlimited data, but fast 3g is spotty, even in the city. I'm sure New York city or Dallas has better 3g service, but I don't live in either one.

Quite bizarre--since AT&T is the ONLY legal carrier for the iPhone in the USA, how can it be the only one NOT supporting features. So, that means, if you have an illegally jailbroken phone, running on another carrier, you get MORE than a legally supported iPhone on AT&T. Sick.

What makes the iPhone so great then? I can't believe owners have been without MMS, multiple programs running simultaneously, tethering, stereo bluetooth, copy/paste, replaceable battery with decent life, reasonable and optional data plans... oh, I get it, it's like the rest of apple's products... GIMMICKY. Yay, you get a cute phone that can play proprietary music and video formats if you pay to download them from Apple. Yay, you get to pay additional money to buy 3rd party apps that add basic functionality to your so-called phone. Congratulations, on June 17th you get MOSTLY caught up to the features that other mobile OS'es have had for years.

Go put your trendy earbuds in, blast the Jonas Brothers' latest single, drive your Miata to the nearest Starbucks, and "play" some Twitter on your iBook while enjoying a frappuccino.

iPhone 3GS sports video recording
IIRC, phones with camera actually did that 5~6 years ago?

Voice control is among the new features
my panasonic phone from 8 years back does this

Cut, copy, and paste words.
is this something to be even proud of?

Send MMS.
time to take out my 5 year old phone to spam MMS

Once again proven that the absolute worst thing about any of the iPhone models is the crappy ass carrier, AT&T.

Ouch, Apple is feeling the pinch of Microsoft's ads. Now, to keep users hooked on Apple, they offer free upgrades to OS 3.0!

Sure, iPhone got a flashier UI, that much i will admit, but lacking all the features that is common in today's mobile phone. It was only with this recent update they added MMS, copy/paste, and all sort of BASIC features.

I think the only reason people buy this phone is only because it looks good. WinMo, Symbian, and all of that may not the kind of flashy graphic that Apple offers, but the phone that uses that OS have all the features that iPhone didn't have (or at least until recently).

I have an iphone and it is the best electronic device I have ever owned. I hate apple, I hate apple tax…. But the Iphone is just awesome. The Apps are what make it…. There is simply a never ending list of stuff to try and use.

Yes, Iphone should have had MMS, Video and cut/paste originally but it didn’t…. we will all have these abilities come the 17th so stop whining.

As a side note MMS and Video were always available if you jailbroke the phone. My carrier in Canada (Rogers) doesn’t support the MMS however.

I think its ridiculous they did't have those features already in the old iphone. To make matters worse, people paid tons of money for that phone...and now they reveal its weakenesses while launching the same product, for almost the same amount of the old ones with features the old phone was supposed to have in the first place...?! WTF Steve!

I might get dinged for saying this, but this kind of capitalism should be punishable. They are making people pay for the same phone with minimal upgrades...for hundreds. Not fair at all.

I was close to buying an iphone before, but i am SO glad i never did...

Lets face it the IPHONE is an amazing technology and the best there is at the moment - unfortunately, its an APPLE / ATT product (2 lets exploit every last penny out of the customer - i dont give a damn about them companies).
