Overheating iPod Stops Commuter Train in Japan

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

You can add "delaying trains" to the list of problems the first generation iPod nanos has caused in Japan.

There's been a lot of talk about overheating iPods in Japan. Just last week, Apple announced free replacements for anyone who has had a problem in Japan with their first generation iPod nano overheating. The move came after pressure from the Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency and trade ministry forced Apple to post a disclaimer on its website providing first-gen iPod nano owners with advice about the issue, and explaining how they could go about getting replacement batteries for their MP3 player.

At the time, the Japanese trade ministry said there had been several cases of iPod nanos overheating to the point of catching fire and burning their owners, and as many as 60 cases of iPods overheating. Though the latest incident didn't burn anyone, it did inconvenience quite a few by delaying an entire train.

Reuters reports that a commuter train in Tokyo was delayed during rush hour on Friday morning when passengers complained of a strong burning smell. When staff went to investigate the issue, a passenger came forward with an iPod that had overheated so much it had burst apart. No one on the train was injured, but the train came to a halt for 8 minutes while they tried to find the source of the burning.

Oh well might come in handy to have one this winter when I am flat broke again and with out electric. Jokes aside better not overheat one of these iCrap since they use lithium polymer batteries. That when they are overheated vent gases and become highly flammable which can cause injury if on person. We all still remember those exploding laptops.

Shouldn't the owners have noticed this like 3 years ago when the 1st gen nano was out for sale?

This incident will do 1 very positive thing. It will increase the rank most nations have for train delays.

It happened because the music the passenger was listening was not approved by the manufacturer. Do not test the wrath of the Appp... manufacturer.

One thing many people fail to understand is, its a batch problem. Engineering will be good so will be the design. But the exact reason will remain unknown as to why apple is using so much varied technology from batch to batch. Either way, i dont mind throwing the burning iFire device on steve's face and then telling him. You were standing wrong.

They need to cross reference what songs were being played at the time of the combustion, then Apple can send notices to those bands telling them they are singing it wrong...
...on the other hand, if it turned out they were all playing Lady GaGa songs it would only support my personal convictions.

Delayed a TRAIN in JAPAN!!! Oh, the horror.

There trains must maintain schedule at any cost. Even a mother's plea to stop a train, after she was separated from her infant while boarding, got little sympathy from rail officials.

But, "there is an app for that". If you pants starts burning, the app will appoint you, at no cost, to an organ bank list.

Apply will rename it iBurns.

As a former Japanese national I tell you, 8 minutes for this is a death blow to all those other commuters in the same train, and the rains following them. I could always count on the timetable when I took transit when I was younger.

Shame on Apple for denying problems until 2 years later.
