iPhone 4S Sales Top Four Million in First Weekend

- By - Source : Apple

Apple has announced that sales of the iPhone 4S topped four million in the first weekend of availability.

When the iPhone 4S hit pre-order status, Apple wasted no time in announcing that it was the most pre-ordered Apple product ever, and broke the previous record set by the iPhone 4. Now, it looks like the iPhone 4S is continuing to be a record breaker. Apple on Monday morning announced that it in its first weekend of official availability, the phone clocked in four million sales.

"iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever."

iPhone 4S is currently only available in seven countries (the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK). However, Apple is preparing to launch it in 22 more by October 28. By the time the Friday after next rolls around, customers in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland will also be preparing to purchase the iPhone 4S.

Apple also announced that more than 25 million iOS users have upgraded to iOS 5, the latest build of Apple's mobile operating system, and more than 20 million customers have signed up for iCloud.

If I were to take a guess, I'd say the main reason it topped 4 million is probably due to a bunch of Sprint adopters. I'd really like to see these numbers broken down by carrier.

iphone 4s may be a good smartphone for a first time iphone buyer, but iphone 4 users shouldn't ditch their iphone 4 for this.
why isn't china on that list of countries? apple has a huge market for iproducts there.

I upgraded to the 4s from a 3GS and I must say.. It's a very nice phone. The screen still blows me away. It also loads games 10x quicker than before!

That's a lot of people buying a disappointing release...but then again there were a lot of 3GS users that are looking to upgrade.

Exactly. When you compare the 4S to the 3GS it's a no-brainer to upgrade, so I'm not surprised. The 3GS sold 3 million in a month, and all those users have probably been waiting to upgrade. Couple that with Sprint's sales and first-time iPhone adopters and 4M sounds reasonable at least.

I wish Android would get more attention. Thing is, there are so many Android phones being released, it's difficult to focus on them. And not all of them are great. Apple just has a bigger name unfortunately. A new iPhone releases I'd say once a year, so it makes sense why focusing on the iPhone is much easier than Android phones. I prefer my Android phone over an iPhone, but I honestly feel Android deserves just as much attention as the iPhone.

Why does it have to be 'ooooh! Shiny' for someone to buy an Apple product, but of course all the 'Nexus Prime' customers buy for the 'correct reasons'?

The iPhone 4S, objectively, has a massive amount going for it. Can they not buy it in order to have the fastest CPU/GPU combination of any phone right now? Or integrated iCloud? Or smaller size in volume than most Android phones (eg SG2 and probably Prime)? Or could they buy after having customer reviews that make the iPhone 4 the phone with the best customer feedback? Or maybe they want it because it has a higher screen DPI than any Android phone? Or maybe they want access to the largest app library in the world?

There are advantages and disadvantages of both Apple and Android phones, I've clearly just highlighted the advantages here, and I do admit there are advantages on the other side too. The point I'm making, however, is that it's very ignorant to assume that people are buying the phone because it's 'shiny' - when actually all the reasons I gave, on their own, would be enough to justify the purchase for logical reasons. The vast majority of tech-savvy people I know recognise those qualities, and don't have an irrational dislike for Apple. I am within that group, I didn't care if the phone I bought was Apple, Android, whatever. I read all of the reviews, all of the specifications, looked at and tried all the phones, and the iPhone 4 (at the time) was the best available. When I buy again, I'll do the same again, but right now I can't see a better proposition than the iPhone 4S. It's very important for Android that Nexus Prime changes that.

So, you announce the phone weeks in advance, make people wait before they can pre-order and open the gates at once. The 4,000,000 orders in a week-end is an impressive one-shot and quite a performance for a single manufacturer, but it's not as extreme as they want us to believe, especially when you know that Android phones totalize 550,000 activations a day ... on any "normal" day.
It's just a matter of time before IOS's market share becomes the same as OSX's market share vs. windows (which will still be quite profitable for Apple I am sure).

I think what you say is true - the Android OS, being as it is, developed for by so many more manufacturers, will probably end up with the lions share of the market.

However, I don't think that that has anything to do with the iPhone 4S sales. Remember, this is a product, not just an OS. These are the best opening sales, of any phone, ever, and I'm sorry but that IS extreme. It's opening sales are vastly, vastly, better than any Android phone has ever dreamt of. Credit where credit is due.

It felt faster than any phone I tried. What phone was faster than the iPhone 4 when it launched?

It also had double the size app store, the best battery life, smallest form factor, highest resolution screen - it allowed me to watch Sky Sports on my mobile (which no other phone does - even today). And it's worked very well for me, I've had no issues at all.

Motorola Droid, HTC HD2, and a couple more phones were faster than the iPhone 4 when it came out.

So because Call of Duty - Black Ops was the best selling game on Xbox 360, or Justin Beiber breaking record in album sales makes it the best out there? No, it is called the iPhone is the most generic simple minded phone for the average consumer. Every time I go to a movie, there is always a bunch of teenage girls on there iPhone texting.

All I hear about is how Apple created Siri and is better than Android. First off Apple did not create Siri. They purchased Siri in April 2010 - Google it. Secondly Android has had Speaktoit and Vlingo out for a very long time that works better than Siri. Instead of giving a stupid answer that Siri does if doesn't know the question, Speaktoit Google searches it for you and shows results. Also you can search Google maps with it. Try using Siri off of Wifi. It takes about 20 seconds for some results. Android has about 8 times faster internet than the iPhone.
http://gizmodo.com/5849953/iphone- [...] =pulsenews

Also iCloud that iSheep are raving about is garbage compared to Dropbox. Dropbox has been out a long time for Google users. It works way better than iClound in the fact it works on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Also you can share files, music, apps, etc. with friends and family where you are limited to only the user account with iCloud. I also like how they copied Android on there lock screen and notification area. Real original Apple.

So enjoy your iPhone that likes to copy everything Android does and tiny screen, no 4G, No turn by turn voice navigation, and only 512 MB of memory, which Apple doesn't mention on there website. LOL

All the debating in here just reminds me how much time people waste on their damn phones. Everywhere you go now, masses of people are glued to their phone screen instead of ... you know, actually looking around and enjoying life. I have an iPhone and it's pretty nice, but I don't see it as a necessity. It's just a novelty device imo. Other than the obvious, making phone calls.

Do yourself a favor, leave your phone at home every once in awhile :)

Pull your head out of the smelly place and read some reviews that have gauged performace.
It is rated as the fastest phone particularly for GPU performace by a fairly wide margin.
Even with its pittance 512MB ram!
OR, for something totally radical, actually try the phone at one of the vendors.

See, when Androidism becomes simple ignorance, I begin to worry.

'We're not going to beat around the bush -- in our approximation, the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market right now. The combination of gorgeous new hardware, that amazing display, upgraded cameras, and major improvements to the operating system make this an extremely formidable package. Yes, there are still pain points that we want to see Apple fix, and yes, there are some amazing alternatives to the iPhone 4 out there. But when it comes to the total package -- fit and finish in both software and hardware, performance, app selection, and all of the little details that make a device like this what it is -- we think it's the cream of the current crop.'

So in summary, you said 'Motorola Droid was faster than the iPhone 4 when it came out?' I say... please.

Your little rant about computer games is irrelevant too. GT on Playstation was also a best seller, is it therefore rubbish? Answer: no. Why? Because being the best selling product does not make it necessarily bad. It's ridiculous to try and claim it does too, by the way.

'iPhone is the most generic simple minded phone for the average consumer'

What you meant to say there was that it was the most capable phone at the time, yet did so in a simple, intuitive way, a way which isn't reserved only for geeks. It's unbelievably sad that you define yourself on how difficult your phone is to use, and also that you try to make out that teenage girls using the phone is a bad thing - yet all you Android fans always say that fashion is why people buy the iPhone? You pretty little boy, would feel emasculated if a girl could work your phone? Bless.

'First off Apple did not create Siri. They purchased Siri in April 2010 - Google it'

Um.... did anyone see me say that they created Siri? You little retard, lol. It doesn't matter who made it, the point is Apple have improved and added to it such that it is now far more advanced than anything you can get on Android. You say they work 'better' - every independant reviewer who has actually tried it disagrees. Who to believe? Independant experts? Or an angry Android geek who wants to flex his un-necessarily-complex-tech muscle skills?

'Android has about 8 times faster internet than the iPhone'

I think that is the single most ridiculously stupid claim I've ever seen. You actually made me question why I'm replying to someone so stupid not to know the difference between a phone and Android.

'Dropbox has been out a long time for Google users. It works way better than iClound in the fact it works on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Also you can share files, music, apps, etc. with friends and family where you are limited to only the user account with iCloud'

I use Dropbox, exclusively. It doesn't sync contacts, it doesn't integrate seamlessly with my phone, and it costs more - both in the sense that you only get 2GB free and that to upgrade space costs more. It also doesn't sync things like conversations you've had with people. Otherwise it's the same. So clearly worse, overall.

'I also like how they copied Android on there lock screen and notification area. Real original Apple'

Did they legally copy? Are there any lawsuits for the notification system? No, that says it all really. They took the one thing that Android fans had been crying about the iPhone not having, and put it in? They're bad when they don't have it, and bad when they do? Please, lol.

'So enjoy your iPhone that likes to copy everything Android does and tiny screen, no 4G, No turn by turn voice navigation, and only 512 MB of memory, which Apple doesn't mention on there website. '

Why does the amount of memory matter to me, when the performance is better than Android - and why should Apple list it? Similar, why does the 800mhz clock speed matter to me? The iphone 4, when it launched, was pretty much the fastest phone you could get, and the iPhone 4S, right now, has a faster CPU/GPU combination that any Android phone, full stop. It's amazing that the Android geeks, such as yourself - don't yet realise despite the Intel vs AMD era that the MHz or MB ram isn't the deciding factor in performance. It's ridiculous that you don't realise that, considering where you're posting. I dunno why you're so uninformed to think that you can't get turn by turn voice navigation (given that I use it daily on my iPhone using an app), but then I think that's you all over? As evidenced in this post. You don't have a clue really, you just want to like Android because then the little girls can't use your phone and you can feel all manly and 'not popular' - you know, like those fat people in denial who say they don't want to look good. You want to be different to those 'popular guys' that you've always been jealous of and think that trying to get a different phone is the way to do it. It's just sad.

And for all of you people reading this who actually bought Android for sensible, logical reasons unlike the BS by the guy I'm posting, then fair enough, and I may well be joining you if the Nexus Prime is any good.
