Following the long-awaited release of evasi0n, a record 7 million iOS 6 iPhones and iPads have been jailbroken in four days.
On Monday, February 4, the Evad3rs Jailbreak Team released their evasi0n jailbreak tool for Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices running iOS 6.0 or iOS 6.1. During its 24 hours of launch, 1.7 million iOS users jailbroke their devices.
Jay Freeman, who created the popular jailbroken app store Cydia, has now announced that nearly seven million iOS devices have installed the untethered jailbreak in the space of four days. (The iOS device can turn on after being turned off without being connected to a PC.)
Consequently, evasi0n has become the fastest-adopted jailbreaking tool of all time. On Thursday, February 7, Freeman’s app store confirmed that 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads and 400,000 iPod touches were jailbroken through the newly-released jailbreak.
"Smart phones have become more and more popular, but they’ve maintained a closed experience that makes it difficult for people to get what they want," Freeman said. "Therefore people have needed to turn to jailbreaking to fill the gap. That’s what made this such a landmark jailbreak,” says Freeman. “It had been so long and we were all so hungry for it."
The first iOS 6 jailbreak takes five minutes to install, which, once completed, allows users to perform tweaks and integrate additional functionality otherwise disallowed by Apple's official iOS versions.
It took hackers 136 days to successfully crack iOS 6.1. Comparatively, it took 98 days for the iPhone 4S to be jailbroken, 38 days for the iPhone 4 and 14 days for the iPhone 3GS.
