12. Audio: Improved Microphone Position And Good Sound

The nx6125 has no special options to offer in terms of audio connections. It has one analog input and one analog output that enable one to connect, say, an external microphone or external stereo speakers. The mobile PC does not provide a digital audio output or 5.1 multi-channel sound. The nx6125 uses a Conexant audio chip as its audio controller. Although the driver for the audio chip does provide an equalizer function to enhance the sound, there is an added tool intended to improve the internal microphone's input quality with the use of a software filter. Incidentally, the internal microphone is installed in the frame beneath the display and not in the absurd position assigned to it on the nc8230, for instance, where it was located on the outside of the case to the right. Interestingly, the microphone can be used even with the display lid closed, as there is a microphone opening in the lid's exterior.

The microphone functions with both the display open...

... and the display closed, thanks to this small opening in the lid.

A software filter is intended to help improve the input characteristics of the microphone

The functionality of the microphone is nevertheless rather modest. If the filter is deactivated, background noise becomes noticeable in audio recordings. Although the background noise is considerably muffled when the filter is active, there is a commensurate sharp decrease in the recording sound level. In other words, you have to shout or place your mouth directly in front of the microphone if your words are to be understood at the other end of an IP telephone connection.

Unlike the nc8230, the audio controller in the nx6125 does not appear to offer any energy saving functions. We rather suspect, however, that ATI's chipset does not support this feature.

Due to the somewhat narrower case, the two stereo speakers, which are located next to the keyboard in the nc8230, have been moved to the front panel.

The two speakers on the front put out a surprisingly good, full sound. They reproduce middles and highs quite clearly, although the highs predominate somewhat. Even a hint of a bass is detectable. At maximum volume, however, there is a bit of distortion from the case.
