Google Throws Money Into the Wind

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Google as we knew it, is long gone.

Last week Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz said that Google needs to be doing other things rather than just search. If working on two mobile operating systems along with a host of web apps wasn't enough, Google is now investing into renewable, green energy.

Google announced via its blog that it has invested $38.8 million into two wind farms that generate 169.5 megawatts of power, which is enough to power more than 55,000 homes.

And what's so special about this wind technology that caught Google's attention?

We’re excited about this first project investment because it uses some of the latest wind turbine technology and control systems to provide one of the lowest-cost sources of renewable energy to the local grid. The turbines can continuously adjust the individual blade pitch angles to achieve optimal efficiency and use larger blades with 15 percent more swept area than earlier generations, allowing capture of even more wind energy for each turbine. The control systems for these wind farms are also advanced and dynamic, allowing for remote 24/7 monitoring and operation to ensure maximum turbine up-time and power production.

And yahoo says google needs to do more than search... Psh.

That's what happen when your sinking, you need to bring other peoples with you.. as per Carol Bartz

Yeh but, Yahoo! is has its very own bycicle turbine system creating 10 watts of power RIGHT NOW!!!

Take that Google!

Errr... Is Google selling the power or using it to power Google-verse

The best bit is that it's not a problem for birds, they tend to stay away from the giant whirring things.

It is however a problem for bats, as it confuses their echolocation and they end up getting splattered. That must have some impact on the air resistance of the blades actually.

(I'm not giving an opinion on any flame worthy topics here, it's all lighthearted =]).

Let's just say that Yahoo's CEO was either drunk, on meth or was suffering from brain damage when she stated that Google needs to do more than searching...tisk tisk tisk.

I wonder how many searches one turbine can handle.

Where exactly are these turbines going to be?

I read that average wind turbine of 2 MW costs about $3 million. ($1.5 mil. for 1 MW.) How on earth did google find turbines which are 7 times cheaper?
May be, $38.8 million is only part of the total cost?

It only said invested in, not built, or gained ownership of. So they probably got a big stake in them.

Great now if they can get some turbine engines and power all of the west coast, then google can very well take over the government for all I care :D

No dude, birds are ninja, they can dodge, the real problem here is whales.

Good for them. Their stake probably fixes their power costs for the forseeable future. I hope this motivates others too.
Unlike conventional or nuclear power plants, wind farms don't present a very good target for terrorists. Even the central control facility is probably quickly replaced with essentially modular components. I wouldn't mind living within sight of a wind farm.

The title is very misleading.

I thought Google is literally throw money in the wind so people could catch it.

Whhhyyy would that be a bad thing!

Plenty new jobs, plenty of cheap power. It would be funny though. All the Physicists going "I TOLD YOU!!!!".

It would be a bad thing for Google that is, wasting all that money, if it where to happen, it would be one of the greatest achievements of human kind to date! Nearly unlimited amounts of energy would be the best thing that could happen right now.

@bogcotton: I think HDmac meant that for Google's sake. But hey, they can probably afford to lose $38.8 million. The benefits of stable fusion would be so great as be worth the demise of Google, anyway, even if it went that far (EXTREMELY unlikely!).

I read about these turbines on popsci. It makes sense for Google to invest in wind energy. 1) They reside in California where the power situation is embarrassing, and 2) they use a heck of a lot of energy and it makes sense to provide their own rather than buy it from some mis-managed co-op.

It search itself on Google.com and found the lowest prices.
