2. Benchmark Tests

We used three test suites to evaluate battery life and computer performance: BAPCo's MobileMark 2005 and SYSMark 2004 SE, and FutureMark's PCMark05.

MobileMark 2005: Battery Lifetimes

The MobileMark 2005 benchmarks test the behavior of mobile computers running on battery power. There are four different battery life tests: office productivity, search and read, DVD playback, and wireless Web browsing. Each test uses real applications in a multitasking environment and runs from the moment when the battery is fully charged and the power brick is unplugged from the wall socket, to the moment at which the battery is fully discharged.

In addition, MobileMark 2005 measures two performance values during the office productivity test: a total performance value, and the average completion time for tasks performed during a single run of all office productivity activities. The total rating incorporates this average completion time and is stated as a point score that compares to a reference system with average components and equipment rated at a standard 100 points.

All test results are written to log files.

MobileMark 2005: Test Results

The following charts show the MobileMark 2005 tests for the Averatec AV1050, the Fujitsu Lifebook B6110D, the Toshiba Portege R200, the VAIO VGN-T350P, as well as the Sony newcomer that is the focus of this series of articles: the VAIO VGN-TX1XP. You can peruse our conclusions after these diagrams.
