In the past Gmail Labs has been great for filling in the gaps that some of us trip over using Google’s mail service and today the Gmail team has announced Google Search right in Gmail.

Whether it’s offering an undo send button or making us do math questions when we hit send (just to make sure we’re in an email-sending state of mind), there seems to be a Labs tool for everything. Now Google is allowing users to put Google Search inside their Gmail, if they so wish. Alright so that’s pretty handy, having Google right there so you can look up all the weird stuff you and your friends talk about over Gtalk and Gmail. However, there’s a couple of genuinely cool features in there that you don’t get with regular Google.

Once you open the search result (in a new tab or window, obviously), you get a drop down menu that lets you do a whole bunch of Gmail related things with the URL. If you're reading a message, you can start a reply to the message with the search result as the first thing in your reply, you can copy the result, or just the URL into your message or send the result to a friend on Gtalk.

The Gmail team also announced a whole bunch of new emoticons which they’ve snagged (with permission, of course) from “top Japanese mobile carriers.”

I love the fact that you love the fact that po0_onyou loves Gmail.

But seriously, Gmail is pretty awesome, even if they don't have fancy eye candy like yahoo/live and servers are down once in a while, Gmail produces much better messages and is more practical.

Wait a sec I'm fairly new to Tom's-does Jane write every single article for Tom's or something? I've read like 5 articles today, all by Jane, all consecutively. :S?

Haha no. I'm one of the staffers but living in Ireland I work European hours. By the time the rest of the office starts, I've done a full day's work.

In short, yes, I work very hard. Send me money.

Wa? Tom's a full time job? :o I thought it was just a group of people who wrote articles in their spare time. Yea, I also used to wonder how people had so much spare time. And I have yet to read an article from you about actual computer hardware :na: or have I read one already but haven't noticed it?

Yep, full time. Lucky me. :) You've likely read hardware stuff by me and not realised. None of us focus on any one category.
