Display Brightness
6. Display Brightness
The table below shows the mean, minimum and maximum brightness for the displays on the four notebooks we tested. The Gateway with its 12.1" display has the highest brightness, but its brightness covers a range of 61 candelas per square meter, meaning that the distribution of brightness across the Gateway's display is the least uniform of the displays on the four notebooks.
| Mean Brightness (candelas/m^2) | Minimum Brightness (candelas/m^2) | Maximum Brightness (candelas/m^2) | Range of Brightness Measures | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fujitsu E8210 | 127 | 107 | 137 | 30 |
| Gateway E-100M | 178 | 144 | 205 | 61 |
| HP nx7400 | 106 | 93 | 117 | 24 |
| Lenovo T60 | 126 | 100 | 143 | 43 |
The following charts show the distribution of brightness across the displays of each of the four notebooks. Note that the Gateway's brightness peaks at the top of the display and, after peaking near the bottom, drops on the sides and the bottom of the display. The Lenovo display (range 43) drops in brightness on the sides and toward the bottom. By comparison, the Fujitsu (range 30) and HP (range 24) displays show fairly flat distribution of brightness.
None of the difference in display uniformity was visible on any of the notebooks in normal use.
