Verizon May Soon Get a 4G Xperia PLAY Too
A Verizon Wireless email reveals that the Big Red will get its own version of the Xperia PLAY 4G handset soon.
Android Central has obtained a Verizon Wireless email revealing a version of Sony Ericsson's PlayStation-certified phone, the Xperia PLAY, for its 4G LTE network. The supposed email is directed towards employees (or press, it's unclear) interested in a training session for the gaming smartphone -- two sessions took place on Monday and two more are scheduled for Wednesday. Training participants can also win an Xperia PLAY 4G LTE model by enduring a short phone call and a Q&A.
A 4G LTE version is the next logical step for the PlayStation Phone's evolution, especially now that OnLive has launched its Android app for tablets and smartphones. While OnLive suggests that players rely on Wi-Fi for the best streaming action, 4G LTE is the preferred connection when on-the-go. A 3G connection is playable, but image degradation and control lag can make the overall experience somewhat unpleasant.
Sony Ericsson previously released a 4G HSPA+ version of the phone for AT&T back in September. However this model features a nice "stealth blue" color and an introductory limited-time pricetag of $49.99 USD with a two-year agreement (which is still offered). Also included are a handful of pre-installed games like Dungeon Defenders, Asphalt 6, Star Battalion, Madden NFL 11, The Sims 3, Tower Blox: My City and Sony's PSOne classic platformer, Crash Bandicoot.
Details surrounding Verizon's 4G Xperia PLAY are obviously unknown -- will this model be similar to AT&T's "stealth blue" version, or will we see something like metallic red? It's probably a given that it will not ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as the update won't arrive on Xperia 2011 handsets until March 2012 at the very latest.

I'll take my 35Mbps down 14Mbps up LTE over "4G" HSPA+ anyday..lol What a hideous device.
Is this what companies do when they get too big? Like, there's too many divisions working independently from each other, so you end up with the Xperia Play and Playstation Vita strangely competing in the same space.
I hope they make an Xperia Play 2, hopefully with a dual or quad core+1GB RAM+ICS.
The idea of the Xperia device was good. Touch screen gaming is pretty weak overall. The thought of a controller being built right in seemed like a great fit. Unfortunately, they didn't execute very well with that idea.
The device is underpowered compared to the other Android phones. A majority of the playstation content is only compatible with the phone. IE: content you buy for your PS3 minis, PSP doesn't work on the phone.
Instead of a new Xperia, I'd rather see support for blue tooth controllers to be added into Android. Then maybe someone can make a shell of a controller to fit your phone into. Portable gaming achieved.
The Play is a good device indeed. Very good.
It's about time for a new model though.
Not really 4G, but companies continue with this nonsense anyway.
