Scientist Infects Himself With Computer Virus

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

A scientist in the United Kingdom says he is the first person to ever be infected with a computer virus.

If you have a pet, chances are your vet has talked to you about microchipping. For a nominal fee, the vet will implant a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice, into the skin on the back of the cat or dog's neck. Each RFID chip carries a unique serial number and if the animal gets lost, a vet, pound or animal shelter can scan it and find out the name and phone number of the person attached to that serial number. It's a great idea but the technology has come a long way in the last few years. So much so that Dr. Mark Gasson from the University of Reading says it's more like a mini computer capable of storing information, manipulating information and doing simple computations.

Dr. Gasson has one of the miniature computers implanted in his hand. It gives him secure access to the building, blocks anyone else from using his mobile phone, however, with these advances, there are also risks. Gasson infected his chip with a virus, and it was subsequently passed on to the computer which he uses to monitor and control the chip. According to the BBC, Gasson claims that if other chips had connected to the machine, they could have been corrupted too.

"With the benefits of this type of technology come risks. We may improve ourselves in some way but much like the improvements with other technologies, mobile phones for example, they become vulnerable to risks, such as security problems and computer viruses."

Dr. Gasson said that his experiment was just proof of principal but that it has important implications for future technologies, especially when medical devices like pacemakers and cochlear implants become more advanced.

Read more on the research into these types of implants here.

Tis the mark of the beast. They are going to force everyone to put it in they're right hand in the comming years with the new one world order that is comming.Dont get it.

Right....

You know I was thinking of making a religion to make the idiots stand out. But then I realized that is what religion does already.

Really hope you're joking.

Key words:
-"They" (insinuating someone outside of oneself with notoriety)
-"Are" (meaning to enact or take action that is not open for protestation...)
-"Force" (implying a lack of will or decision)
-"They're" (showing a lack of grasp of the English language...should be "their"--meaning ownership of "them"[Google Chrome can't save you from improper grammar, bud])
-"[coming]" (I'm not going to ding you twice on your lack of appreciation for syntax and spelling...this implies something unavoidable...like a train)

...with all of this fear, how do you have the audacity to advise, "don't get it"? From everything that you've said, it's unavoidable and to be expected... Mixed signals is how they keep the masses confused with fear, uncertainty, and doubt...

Solution: READ...

--Now back to your regularly scheduled program, folks!--

This article is funny and disheartening. It's nice to see the continual development of RFID, however, if it too is that susceptible to "viruses" (which are nothing but programs designed not to do what YOU want it to do), the whole makeup should be rethought.

Where are the Apple folks screaming to make it Free-BSD based? lol

I'm so sarcastic...

Keep it fun, folks!

Cool. So it's not just biological viruses that can infect us, but computer viruses too. Maybe my great-great-grandson will be a cyborg. :)

Has anyone else seen the "The Outer Limits" episode where this exact thing happened? Some guy removed a kidnapped man's chip from his hand and replaced it with his own. Then everyone accepted him as that person and the real one got away. Or something like that.

In the future people can chose to get the more expensive/pretty/old hardware IID(Rfid), IChip(Rfid) ,IPMaker (Peacemaker) from Apple!
They will be running some sort of OS something.

Perhaps we should run a weekly contest for the most misleading title. This one would be a champion.

Totally bogus. Who would make a virus to infect his "hand implant?" Perhaps Dr. Gasson himself? I've worked closely with medical devices for years now. It would be almost impossible to infect a pacemaker or defibrillator.

Religion isn't the issue. Misinterpretation as a consequence of idiocy is. There are plenty of devout, religious people who function very well in society. Unfortunately, CoryInJapan is not one of them.

Linux actually has the most vulnerabilities of any system, if you don't believe me do your research, or just ask me.

windows is actually the most secure.

Imagine what happens some years into the future with VR tech... directly into YOUR BRAIN? That would be easier and cheaper than making "HOLODECKs".

People would get BSODs.

Just wait until the terrorists start using something like this. Meh, it was bound to happen, anyway.
