Verizon: iPhone is Digitally Clueless Beauty Queen

7:30 PM - December 4, 2009 - By Jane McEntegart - Source : Tom's Guide US

The latest DROID advertisement is out and, while the last ad targeting the iPhone was quite clever in that it pointed out all the things DROID could do that the iPhone couldn't, the latest commercial is a little less constructive in its criticisms.

The latest commercial from Verizon labels the iPhone as a "pretty, tiara-wearing, digitally enhanced beauty pageant queen." This shouldn't be all that surprising when you consider Verizon has already branded the iPhone a "misfit toy" in recent advertisements, however, it is a step away from the more mature DROID vs. iPhone commercial we saw a few weeks ago.

Check out the commercial below and let us know what you think!

I never really considered the handset 'appearance' category, but now that you think about it, the iPhone seems to be owned mostly by 1) women 2) male 'metrosexuals' and 3) homosexuals.

it's true.. i own an ipod touch (identical in every respect save functionality for all intents and purposes) and the entire interface feels like so much polish on a childish gadget. There are so many times I wish I could do things in the UI that make sense but Apple hasn't included.

I saw this ad like a week ago...and it made me chuckle...but since when have Verizon ads been news worthy? There's no lawsuit news or anything like that to go with it.....I bet a whole bunch of new commercials on all sorts of things came out this week...so what!?

Finally someone steps up to the plate and tells it like it is! The IPOD is a wonderfully functioning locked down toy for adults and that happens to make phone calls.

meh crackberry for work iphone for my self. ya its behind the times ya there is stuff it cant do. sure there are lower priced options that don't require dealing with apple. but it all comes down to this. I work 12+ hour days almost year round fixing much more complicated crap then a phone. by the time I'm done I want a phone that has very little in the way of tweaking. its perfect if i need a app i get one it works. oh and i have been with att for 8 years moved 3 times more then 500 apart each time same service not amazing but not what everyone makes it out to be and just as good as sprint\verizon witch i use\used for work.

Im not a woman a metro or gay, your generalization reeks of bias sir.

Quote :...droids don't pull people's arms out of their sockets when they lose.

However, this Droid has been known to pull iphone chips out of their sockets.

i get it, there isn't one option that works for everyone and for your needs and likes, the iphone is what works best. i'm being honest when i say, good.

but this article is about comparison of the two phones. and the iphone is being shown here in it's true light. it is known and common practice that _most_ woman ask a man to hook up the entertainment system in the house because they just want something to work, not figure it out. the iphone is technically a weak phone. i review each technical choice for a month before i spend money on a phone or pc part. and within a couple of hours of reviewing the iphone a yr or two ago, it was more show than meat. that type does have it's place in our world, but technically it sucks. att and verizon and everyone else for that matter have better phones than the iphone. but the iphone gets the most images and marketing hype. and why? not bcuz it rules, but bcuz it works and it works bcuz it limits everything on it.

so yeah, it's a beauty queen. they look pretty but are dumb.

I don't think the iPhone looks good. It looks very feminine. The rounded edges make it look like a cutesy toy for the people that make corners dangerous.

The Droid has nice angles, good form, it looks like a new age, powerful device. I think the Droid looks better than the iPhone.

But that is just personal opinion on the looks. If you want to get down to functionality, the Droid comes out way ahead.

The ad makes no since. 1. How is the iphone a beauty queen? It is either all black or white and flat? Not exactly a pink phone with diamond sparkles here. 2. I am sick of the droid crap. It is a crap phone. Crap keyboard, UI sucks and is slow, camera lense sucks no matter how many megapixel, battery cover falls off, auto focus sucks, media player is lame comapred to iphone's, not enough games or apps, limited to 500MB of app storage since you can't install to the microSD (possibley due to slow performance of microSD compared to built in storage), also limited to 16GB unless you purchase a $100 microsd, underlocked A8 CPU to 550mhz (compared to 600mhz), buggy OS according to reviews, lacks multi-touch where as other droid phones aren't, etc. The droid will not be good until atleast a second revision.

My iPhone's really just an iPod anyway. The phone and call logging system's pretty weak, I generally a VoIP app on my computer for calls I want to make.

It works as a remote for iTunes on my PC.. I stream digital media (in spite of their attempts to prevent it).. and listen to several podcasts. Occasionally I use Mapquest or DirecTV's app. POP EMail rarely. I use it daily, but not so much as a phone. It's a little less awkward and functional than the RAZR and Palm combination I had been using. It has more media options than the Curve I used for a while.

I'm just glad I got it for free. I really don't care about looks, unlike the interior decorator types commenting above, a more "manly" look won't help me any if it doesn't have the utility.

I have to agree that the DROID just looks more masculine. I'm a pretty big guy and i think i would just look silly holding an iPhone up to my face pushing icons with my finger.
I picked up a DROID a couple days ago and so far I love it. No complaints here.

How is it 'known' that the iphone is a 'weak' phone. Why don't you provide quotes from people in the business saying this. The iphone is not "weak" in the hardware sense... 600mhz Cortex A8, 256MB RAM, PowerVR SGX with VPU, GPS, 3.5" screen, bluetooth 2.0, fastest 3G HSDPA radio, etc. It is not "weak" in terms of usable apps. It is not weak in terms of customization, since I and many million have jailbroken. In terms of 3rd party support...nope. Why don't you really debate instead of posting your BS.

I wonder if the Droid can unlock doorways to intergalactic trash compactors and play 3D recordings of princesses in distress :)

You actually like the call log and contact system? The dropped calls since it gets a weaker signal than a 5 year old razr I swap the SIM card to at times?

I use it more in spite of the phone subsystems than for it.
