Tweets Become Key Evidence in Murder Case
A harsh exchange on Twitter leads to a real-world homicide.
Here's a few words of wisdom we've tried to express in recent articles: don't say anything stupid on Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace. Why? Because it can be used against you. Case in point: tweets sent by murder victim Kwame Dancy, a 22-year-old college student, have now become key evidence in a murder trial against the accused killer, 22-year old Jameg Blake.
According to the New York Daily News, the two young men grew up together in Harlem, New York, however the friendship turned sour as seen in a heated exchange of words found on Twitter. The fight emerged from cyberspace and out into the streets, leaving Dancy gunned down just a few feet away from Gov. Paterson's home.
"That's not a reason to shoot somebody," said Dancy's mother, referring to the virtual fight on the social website. "That's crazy. I don't know what's going on with that Twitter thing." She was appalled that an online spat let to a shotgun blast in her son's neck.
The shooting incident took place on December 1. Blake was arrested two days later, and pleased not guilty to the charges. Police officials said that the relationship was rocky at best, and that the Twitter exchanges--with outside parties jumping into the online fight--made the situation worse.

Cmon please be nice. It's Kev's personal blog site. It ain't got no spellcheck.
Anyway it's sad that teens settle disputes with guns... they should have used a samurai.
How would this be any different than if they argued standing next to each other? Dont get me wrong, I dont get twitter at all (seems pointless) but its not really to blame. I am refering to what the mother said. Here is a hint, dont let your kids hang out with bad ones, maybe they wouldnt get shot? Plus how nasty can you get with someone only using 160 characters. Seems like it would take a long time to insult someone properly.
your spelling is ridiculous and you should be serving fast food, not writing anything.
There's an old saying that comes to mind that everyone should remember: be careful what you tweet for.

Spellcheck would not fix the error on this site. The word "pleased" was not spelled incorrectly. It was simply the wrong word. Spellcheck doesn't know that "pleased" should have been "plead" or "pleaded" So for those folks who think Spellcheck will fix everything, be warned. Proof-Reading requires just that. READING.
Shotgun blast to the neck... heh I feel sorry for the cops who have to clean that up.
Guys, I can also say one thing... be careful, please.
I know i'm going a bit off point, but truly, if I was anyone of you, I would erase my myspace, facebook, and all that stuff. I woudl also not txt anything bad at all (because all of that is saved too).
This technology age marvels and scares at times. Yes, tweeter was useful in this incident (to find the motive and the perp), but can you imagine in 10 years going for a job interview and you employer pulls up your internet history from your isp, or pulls up "deleted" pics from your facebook account? Imagine political campaigns where one candidate shows everyone a list of porn sites his oppononent visited.
We have it harder now than age before us (as far as privacy). Be smart, becaue EVERYTHING you do online is saved somewhere.
... er.. and dont shoot ppl please

There is no reason to take paranoia to ridiculous levels. It's far less stressful to just watch what you post and keep your intimate details private. If you have fun using those services, then keep having fun with them, just remember to be smart about what you are posting. I would believe most reading this site would already be informed about what is good to post and what you might want to keep private.
Extremes are never really good for anyone, however. There is more to life than just black and white, good and bad, or wrong and right. In my opinion, there is a big grey area in between to have such an extreme stance on much of anything. While for example murder might not have much of a grey area, what you're posting to facebook, myspace or twitter certainly does.
forget a flamewar now its gunwar

i think he meant if he was the killer
They put the term "e-thug" to a another level.
not sure why I put "a" before "another"
