Tomorrow Toshiba is revealing a Cell-based HDTV that can record eight channels simultaneously.
Move over pathetic DVR: Toshiba has your number with an HDTV that can record eight different high-definition channels simultaneously. Although the device hasn't hit the streets, Toshiba plans to unleash the 55-inch fury in Japan this December, and hopefully here in the States soon afterward (slated for sometime in 2010). To make things even tastier, the upcoming HDTV is based on the Cell multimedia processor, the same brain that powers Sony's PlayStation 3 console.
But don't get too excited just yet. According to IDG, Toshiba's Cell Regza comes with a super huge pricetag: $11,175 USD. While that kind of cash could buy a car or a really, really hot date for Saturday night, apparently Toshiba doesn't deem the pricetag too steep, expecting consumers to snatch up a thousand or so each month after the TV hits Japanese store shelves.
Does that mean Toshiba's new HDTV will run PlayStation 3 games without the console? Certainly not, but thanks to the Cell processor, heavy video processing is "a breeze," providing 143 times the arithmetic processing capacity over Toshiba's current HDTVs. As many PS3 fanboys already know, the Cell processor--developed by Toshiba, IBM and Sony--contains a single PowerPC core and eight co-processors.
Toshiba said that the Cell processor itself will be located in an external box--roughly the same size as an older Blu-ray player--and housed with a hefty 3 TB hard drive. Consumers can record up to 26 hours of television from the eight simultaneous channels, eating up two-thirds of the drive. The remaining space can be used for desired shows that consumers want to keep longer than what the simultaneous recording function provides.
Toshiba will unveil the HDTV during Japan's Createc electronics show kicking off tomorrow.

sweet. if the price ever comes down into realistic territory suck at around 2 grand it would be a awesome thing.
Awesome!!!
just have to wait to reach mainstream
so
suck at .
sorry i meant such as
Cool, but for that price I could buy a much cheaper model and build a kick-ass HTPC
Somehow I don't think scientists are going to be buying 300 of these to do some super computing.
or no htpc at all, just a plain old fashioned uber-computer with all in, and use it for the same and more.
It would be really cool if the processor was not in an external box but part of the flat panel...
Still, I like!
I just want the external box. 3TB DVR... that is cool.
Amazing...
Doesn't it upscale standard def to 1080p as well?
Apparently they won't let me post a youtube link demonstrating the Cell TV but if you search "Toshiba's Cell-based TV at CEATEC" on youtube you can watch it.
Built-in PLAYSTATION 3!!!!
C'mon Toshiba... You know you want to.
Alright.... so the TV DOES NOT ACTUALLY have an integrated cell processor as the title says it does. It sits inside an external box. That title is very misleading, especially when the 4th paragraph contradicts the title and the first half of the article.
So like audioee says, just give us the external box and I would gladly hook it up to a much better quality Samsung HDTV.
But can it play Crys...
(cue beating from other TH users)
So basically they added the processor of the $300 ps3 some special tuning software to record 8 streams or maybe 8 tuners iether way and added 3tbs of storage for an extra $9000. I can do that with a $2000 htpc and get me an extinct Pioneer Kuro which is still probably one of the best displays out still.
this picture belongs to the cpu of ps3 slim.
are you kidding me?
You should get a lot more than just a 'date' for that.
Their Z series HDTVs came with "cell" chip for years!!!
And no, it doesn't cost a fortune and actually the only noticeable benefit was: higher quality SD -> HD upscaling.

Well said.
Wouldn't it not matter how many hdtv streams it can record since you only technically have a single cable box? I dunno how japan works but in the US most cable/sat companies would slap you upside your head if you didn't have a box for each stream..
I thought the PS3 had 6 co processors, not 8...

.....and have money left over for a surround HDTV setup, a small boat, or a nice car with just a couple years on it, etc. $11,175 is a lot to pay for such a thing, factor in tax as well and wow. Toshiba may not be worried about the price tag, but I bid them good luck in finding many consumers with $12k just laying around for just an HDTV/DVR. They do realize there is a global recession and the value of yen is way overinflated (bringing about horrible exchange rates for the Japanese), right?
its 1 real processor that manages 6(in the ps3) and 7 (in no PS3) math-co processors. They don't have their own useful dedicated memory integers and are actually very limited to their capacities. Come on Tom's Sony is the king of conning people, dont try this crap on your viewrs!
Does it play PS3 games?
Does it play Crysis?

Sure you can but it won't be CELL and you want be that cool as well!
