T-Mobile to Launch HTC Magic (Android) in July
T-Mobile has finally made everything official: the company will launch its second handset running Google’s mobile operating system in July.
Already available in a number of other countries, the HTC Magic, or as T-Mobile is calling it, the MyTouch 3G will launch this summer on a two year contract with a $199 pricetag that’s in line with Palm’s Pre and Apple’s iPhone 3G S. Packing a 3.2-inch 320 x 480 touch screen, the MyTouch 3G is said to be slimmer than the G1 and lacks a physical keyboard. Offering support for 3G and Wi-Fi, the phone will come with a music player and of course, Android 1.5 featuring all the usual Google-related suspects like Google Maps, Gmail and search. Reports suggest that the phone will also have a better battery life compared to the G1.
T-Mobile claims to have sold over 1 million G1s since it launched the device last autumn. The carrier notes that here are currently about 5,000 applications available in the Android store, and the average G1 user has downloaded more than 40 applications with about 80 percent of G1 owners using the phone to browse the web on a daily basis.
You can place preorders for the MyTouch 3G from July 8 onwards, with order to ship at the end of the month. General availability for the phone is pegged for the beginning of August. The device is available in black, white or “merlot.” Anyone tempted? Better yet, any G1 owners planning on upgrading to this device once it hits shelves? Let us know!
