Sony Officially Launches Tablet S and Tablet P

- By - Source : Sony

Sony is now taking pre-orders for the Sony Tablet S which is slated to arrive next month. The book-styled Sony Tablet P will be released later this year.

Wednesday Sony officially announced its long-awaited Android tablets, the blandly named Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P (seriously, Sony?). The former tablet is up for pre-sale starting today, and will land on store shelves next month (September). The Sony Tablet P device will be released later on this year at an unspecified date.

Launching next month, the Sony Tablet S will feature a 9.4-inch touchscreen display backed by Nvidia's Tegra 2 SoC and Android 3.1. As reported earlier, the tablet will sport a rather unusual "folded" asymmetric design that shifts the device’s weight closer to your palm, and will also have an overall weight of 1.33-lbs "for hours of comfortable use." Also included will be a front and rear-facing camera, built-in Wi-Fi conectivity, an SD card slot and support for a micro-USB interface.

"The screen is sloped when placed on a flat surface, enhancing visibility and making typing more comfortable," the company said. "Placing a Sony Tablet S device onto a specialized charging cradle (sold separately) converts the device into a digital photo frame, a digital clock that displays customizable information or chumby with access to over 1,500 fun and entertaining apps."

As for the upcoming Sony Tablet P, the device will mimic a virtual magazine/book using two 5.5-inch displays and an innovative folding design. Overall the device will weigh around 0.83-lbs and could easily fit into a pocket, purse or backpack. Like it's larger "Tablet S" brother, it will come packed with Nvidia's Tegra 2 SoC, Wi-Fi connectivity, a front and rear-facing camera, an SD card slot and support for a micro-USB interface. But it will also be 4G-capable (exclusively on AT&T) and use Google's Android 3.2 OS.

"Software taking advantage of the unprecedented design of the Sony Tablet P device allows its dual screens to be used for different functions simultaneously such as playing video on one screen while using the other as a controller or reading email on one screen while using the other as a virtual keyboard," the company explained. "The displays can also be combined to form a single large screen for Internet browsing and more. By holding the device vertically, you can also read eBooks much in the same manner you would a physical book."

On the software front, both tablets will be crammed with Sony's Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited services, its Reader Store and its Personal Space cloud storage for sharing pictures and videos captured on the tablets. And, as reported earlier, both tablets are PlayStation Certified and include full versions of the original PSOne game Crash Bandicoot and Pinball Heroes pre-installed (via the PlayStation Suite). Both tablets are also Google certified, so users will have access to the Android Market and other Google-related applications.

"These devices truly represent the best of everything Sony has to offer," said Mike Lucas, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Networked Technology and Services Division. "From hardware to software and services, Sony Tablet devices embody all our innovations rolled into one."

The Sony Tablet S device is available in both a 16 GB and 32 GB versions, and will be sold at Sony Stores including online and other authorized retailers nationwide for about $499 and $599, respectively. So far pricing and availability for the Sony Tablet P is unknown.

Ah awesome. They have final names.

I'll be keeping an eye out for Tablet P - it looks really unique for a tablet.
I'm not sure if it's enough to make me want to buy a tablet though..

PSX is dead to me. At least add a PSP emulator! Hmph.

If their second generation "P" model (clamshell design) has a PS2 emulator it will be an instant success. I wonder why they didn't add it to PS Vita... Someone told me that may very well be because the PS2 (and its game library) still brings Sony some revenue.

Too expensive, another flop.

Expensive, thick, build quality in question with overuse of cheap plastic, different but questionable design, over a dozen other tablets on market with either better designs or cheaper prices.

Sony these suck and you fail.

Has Sony R&D not just see what happened with HP? Very few people are in the market for expensive tablets. Most consumers are looking for a tablet that will go on the web and download apps for about $199 to $299. IMO that is the sweet spot that would steal shares from Apple. Just wait a few months these will be at Best Buy for $99 and $149 as well.

Does anyone else see the hypocrisy here? First, Sony bans Linux on the PS3, then creates an Android tablet, which is UNIX-based.

no hypocracy here if thats concerned. Theres a difference between a ps3 and a tablet in case you havent noticed. Android is based on UNIX but its still not the linux os you couldve put on your ps3.

An iconia tab A-500 (a is for android) is $300, the w-500(for windows) is $429. Asus transformer is $350, the Eee Tablet is $449.

These manufacturers must think consumers are stupid. Windows costs $100, Android is free. If the windows tablet is $100 less then the android tablet, then the android tablet is over priced by roughly $200. Acer and Asus are the only companies that haven't tried ripping the consumer off.

I can see the P tablet having a moderate price increase due to being unique, but the S tablet needs to be at least $100 lower for it to sell.

@dalethepcman I understand what you're going for here, and I completely agree that these tablets (along with all currently on the market) are overpriced, but your information is a tad off.

Acer Iconia A500 (16 GB): $400
Acer Iconia W500: $480 (at Amazon - best I found)
Asus EEE Transformer (16 GB): $400

If either the Acer or the Asus had managed to come in at the $300 price point, I would have given them a stronger consideration, but as is they too remain overpriced, especially with the severe lack of Android tablet applications, and the poor choices on Nvidia's part as far as the architecture of the Tegra 2 chipset, which are going to haunt these Sony tabs as well.

Sony needs to make more noise about this tablet. I only learned it was up for pre-order at, guess where, Tom's.
