Sony's PS3 Motion Controller is Called "Move"

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

So much for "Wand" or "Arc."

So all the guessing about Sony's motion controller for the PlayStation 3 is out the window. Surely we should have figured out the name would have something to do with movement, but no. We came up with "Wand" or "Arc" or some other silly name we can't mention here.

Surprisingly, Sony didn't wait until E3 2010 to show how clever the PlayStation Move title would be for its upcoming device. Instead, it broke out the controller during GDC 2010 today and said that it will arrive in stores this Fall.

Gizmodo reports that Sony will provide three packages at launch: the PlayStation Move controller by itself, a bundle with the Move, the Eye, and a game, and a complete package with Move, the console, and more. Sony said that the Eye + Move combo package will cost less than $100.

The site was also able to get a little hands-on with the device, and said that Sony adapted a SOCOM game to use the PlayStation Move. "SOCOM, compared to point-and-shoot shooters on the Wii, was much smoother, much less jittery and more accurate," the site said. "The combination of Move and PlayStation Eye seems to work well in this aspect, but it's not exactly better to use this when you compare it to a standard controller or a Mouse + Keyboard."

"I can see this as better for novices to shooters, being able to aim where you want to shoot," the site adds.

My favorite Wii game was a shooter. I'm glad that is coming on a more powerful and more feature packed console.

Sure, it's a stupid name, but still no match for iPad...

At less than $100, the combo definitely looks intriguing. Something I will definitely keep in mind when looking for future gaming opportunities.

Yet another console device that can break TVs if used improperly.

That's the thing about the wii that really got on my nerves. The fact that I nor anyone could hold a remote still. This is especially a problem for the little kids, Nintendo's base. I would love to see something like the wii mote without the jitter. Might actually cause me to play a video game -- something I haven't done for a very long time.

"The other game, the Sports Champions sword + shield fighting, is about what you'd expect. It's more or less 1:1 motion, like the Wii MotionPlus, but it's not so much more accurate than the Wii that you'd call it a dramatic improvement. An improvement, yes, but not dramatic. The left hand also holds a controller in order to wave the shield around, and that was a bit awkward in my experience. Right hand was fine, left hand a bit awkward to control simultaneously."

hmm... I hope the games will be much better when it is actually released this Fall or I will be very disappointed.

tayb :
I love how the same people bashing the Wii are suddenly on board with the Wii-mote that Sony designed to work on the Playstation. After four years the only thing Sony could come up with is blatantly ripping off the Wii-mote and changing the name? Seriously? At least Microsoft came up with something different with Natal. My question about this whole thing is developer support. What developer(s) are going to develop specifically for Move or even for Natal? Just a fraction of the install base will own these things so it isn't practical to design a game around this functionality. I can't imagine much more than shoddily made mini games or Move/Natal functionality being thrown in after real development has taken place. I still might be able to wave my hand with Natal and watched a movie though. Wii-Mote for Sony doesn't have that going for it.

Completely agree. It looks like a blatant ripoff of the Wiimote.

And of course since it's Tom's Hardware, we have to throw in an Apple bash in a completely nonrelevent article.

Who cares if The 'Move' is a rip-off of the wii-mote, When i first got the wii when it came out I was very disappointed in the controller. it didn't work how i expected it to, i think everyone was sort of under the impression it would be a more 1 to 1 experience then the gesture based mechanics we've come accustomed to, the 'move' however finally provides me with what ive been waiting for, true 1 to 1. I'm glad they ripped off the wii-mote, now theres a motion controller that is actually usable and works, and which is now on a gaming console that doesn't totally suck.

Why don't they add a MOUSE controller as an option? I can't take seriously any FPS without a precise pointing device.

No. Wiimote doesn't come with a camera that "sees" where your "..mote" is. And who cares, who invented it first.

Nothing Blizzard does is "new". Yet it's the most successful game developer company.

Just seems like a gimmick to me, I doubt it will be any thing more than a niche market, therefore lacking the software to sell it and make it mainstream.

If Sony really want to grab a bigger market share, they have to just do one simple thing, get their game developers to include mouse and keyboard support for gaming, especially FPS. FFS The sony supports a mouse and keyboard already, I really don't get why these dumb ass developers don't see the potential extra sales by including it, they would only have to develop the sub routines once then apply to each game, how hard can it be?

Until then, I will stay with my PC thanks :)

I doubt could successfully put force feedback in such a small device. Since the controller isn't fixed to a desk, I would assume that you would need some super fast spinning gyro's inside it in order to feel some sort of resistance that would resemble force feedback. It's all about elements of physics. I'm sure they could put in some sort of "rumble pack" though.

I bet I can remember the name of the current PS3 controller if I try hard enough. But who cares. If it works, fine. If they'll make a good enough light sabre game I might even buy it.

In the end this'll be just a gimmick. Developers just cant target this small an audience without making the game work just as well with the standard controller, which in turn spoils the limits of innovation.

Gilbert crysis on the ps3 can support keyboard and mouse aswell as the normal controler and the move if crytek wants it to.

The most fun I had with the wiimote (with the add on) was with wii resorts with the kendo sword fighting.

I think this would be great with star wars light saber games, Assassins creed games, God of War, and any other sword game. FPS would be good to.

Imagine this coupled with 3D???

Will it work on a big TV? I have a projector that's over 100" and the Wii won't work on it. Hopefully they've come up with a better system. I'd have a wii already if it worked.

They should just call it the Sony Dildo, cause that's exactly what it looks like. Oh, and it vibrates!
